Hi all!
I’m Jessica and I’m once again a bunny mom
over the weekend I was attending a fiber expo and I fell in love with a baby bunny and brought her home. Amelia is an 8 week old aguti satin angora. She is my second angora but it’s been about 12 years since my last one passed. So far she is adjusting to indie pampered bunny life quite well. We have just started to work on litter training and she seems to be getting the idea. She is settling in great with my husband and I and loves her nightly brushing then cuddles, she was even grooming my husbands arm tonight while she snoozed. She is adjusting to our 4lb dog great and they were sharing my lap thefirst night.
Right now I’ve just been doing lots of reading to refresh my knowledge, and picking up everything she could possibly need. My biggest issue right now is finding pellets that will meet her nutritional needs. Her breeder reccomends an 18% protein food for optimal wool production. Sadly living in suburbia feed stores are far and few between and 40-50lb bags are hard to use wuickenough with only one bun.
Anyways here’s Amelia
Welcome : )
Gosh, what a pretty bunny! She sounds very, very sweet.
I’m not sure why your pictures are showing upside down, nor how to fix that for you, sorry!
Regarding pellets, are there breeders close enough nearby that you could buy smaller portions of their feed?
Just doing a small online search, the only pellet I’ve found so far with the 18% protein is Mannapro’s Gro Formula, but I believe that is only in bulk bags.
We do have other members with wool breed rabbits and I as far as I know, they don’t feed a higher protein diet. Is something you would need to do to if you were to continually harvest the wool?
Could you supplement the diet with high protein hay perhaps?
No idea why my pics are upside down, clearly my tech impairment is strong right now.
My breeder is almost 2 hours away, and the closest feed store that carries the food she uses in an hour away. She is currently on heinold 17-19 wool formula. Right now I’m mixing oxbow young rabbit in with her current food. It’s ingredients are similar, and it’s higher protein then most of the other foods available at the large pets stores. I’m planning supplement with a bit of extra alphfa hay to help up her protien. Any other high protien hays you would suggest?
I know their nutritional needs are a bit different but it makes sense when you figure they are growing 3-5 inches of wool every 90 days, and often 6-10 ounces (by weight) at a time. As a satin angora she she will shed out the longest of her coat. She will always look fluffy, and won’t require haircuts like the Germans, giants or hybrid angoras. I just want to keep her a happy healthy bun 🙂
Amelia is lovely. Welcome!
Oxbow is my pellet of choice. She’s young, so Alfalfa is good. All bunnies need unlimited hay. Orchard Grass Hay has the most protein after Alfalfa, but isn’t that far above Timothy.
A little sunflower and/or pumpkin seeds as a treat would add some protein also.
Thank you!!
We have alfalfa and Timothy right now, and I’ll grab some orchard next time I’m at the store.
I will also grab her some sunflower and pumpkin seeds from the bulk store. Should the sunflower seeds be hulled?
I just want to make sure she has enough protien for proper growth and development. Her coat is amazing and very thick, it’s also just over 3 inches long which is crazy for only being 8 weeks
Hi and welcome – is it an ipad camera?
My Mum always sent me her photos upside down with her ipad – so turn the ipad around the other way, it should be OK
Could you find the pellets you want and get them delivered though amazon or similar…? Just a thought…
Yes, Amelia looks to have fur that needs attention already at a young age! Goodness what dedication! I know I couldn’t have an angora anything.
What dog do you have that weighs just 4lb? It’s great that they can be friends ![]()
The pus were taken on my iPhone, but the front camera. The appeare rightside up on my phone.
I haven’t found a mail order source for her food but I’m looking. If we can clear out the freezer space I may drive the hour each way to get a bag of the food she’s been on if needed
Her coat is gonna be a fair amount of work but she loves getting brushed out, it’s part of her daily routine.
My dog is a chihuahua poodle mix, he’s fairly mellow now that he’s nine years old. Amelia decided to give him kisses today and it resulted in play bows and then bouncing at each other
haha, so does that make him a Chihuaoodle, or a Poohuahua? ![]()
Vienna, I lol’d at Poohuahua!
Welcome to the forum, Amelia is a lovely bunny ![]()
They call him all kinds of diffent things but he looks like falcor from never ending story.
He and Amelia are becoming good friends quickly, they are already sharing lap time
Falkor! My fave of ALL faves.!!!!!
I went to Munich and went to the studios where it was filmed (the racing snail is tiny btw !!!) and I got to “RIDE” FALKOR !!!!!!!
Soooo cool. Felt like I was 10 again. ![]()
Oh my gosh that’s so amazing!!!! I’ve gotta reformat my pics since they are apperantly all to big, but then I’ll share pics of them playing ![]()

Amelia is lovely. The sunflower seed should be hulled, and they should be plain, unsalted ones.
