Hi everyone!

I’ve been lurking for a few weeks, the search feature has actually given me all the answers to my questions so I haven’t had much need to post lol. I have 5 year old twins and a 4 year old, we live in GA, have a cat and a dog, and decided to add a bunny to the mix. My husband is in the military and I stay home with the kids and work part time online doing SEO work. I grew up with bunnies but was definitely not doing it right! Most of them only lived 2-4 years, and after all the reading I’ve been doing I now know why. HAY! My parents gave me a bunny, and the supplies were basics- Walmart pellets, cage, and litter box. I don’t think they knew any better either, I’m glad I did a lot of research when we decided to add a bunny to the family. 

We got B-Rabbit (Holland Lop) the end of February, he’ll be 11 weeks on Thursday and I scheduled his neuter today for the end of April. A little nervous about that! I tried finding a rescue rabbit for a few months and came up with dead ends, unless I wanted to drive 3+ hours. I know that’s selfish of me to say I didn’t want to drive that far. If it makes any difference the dog came from the pound and the cat is a stray off the street lol. He lives inside in a XL dog kennel for now, doing awesome with the litter training, but has started spraying the cat and dog. He loves hopping around the living room, very fond of the cat, dog, and kids. Not as crazy about me and my husband but he doesn’t hate us either. He doesn’t like being picked up, but I wasn’t expecting him to. He’s getting Manna Pro (what the breeder had him on) and timothy and alfalfa hay, I gave him a little parsley today, and picked up some romaine to try in a few days after I see how he handles the parsley. I know I’m a week early with starting the veggies but I was a little excited, and don’t plan to give him tons. Hope that’s not a huge no-no. He’s not crazy about hay so I’m going to order a bunch of different hays (Oxbox and American Pet Diner off Foster and Smith) and see if we can find one he likes. Planning to switch him over to Oxbow gradually when we get towards the end of the Manna Pro, had to buy a huge bag and it’s taking us awhile to get through it.

Awww Welcome! With all those kids, I wouldn’t want to drive that far either. Also, when I have driven that far it’s been my experience the owners are, like, waiting at the door, plop the bunny in your arms and it’s “here ya go” and then what do you say as you walk away with a bun you’ve driven hours to get but weren’t given a chance to really decide. I don’t think I would have taken my lionhead if I’d had a chance ( not because he’s a lionhead, honest! He’s just an idiot). But the other worked out, though the owner was careful to have her poopy butt wrapped up in a towel. That was a four month journey to fix! So don’t feel bad. We will love hearing about your new baby.

Don’t feel bad about where your bunny came from! I didn’t get Frodo and Arya from a pound either. Every bunny deserves a good home and looks like B-rabbit found his! He looks very very cute!

About the veggies. After examining my bunnies, my vet told me I could already start introducing veggies to my bunnies and they’re 9 weeks old now going into week 10. I’m giving them on occasional nibble but I’m not putting the veggies on their diet just yet.

Again, he looks sooooooo cute!!! Oh my goodness I adore holland lops. <3<3

Another lop!! Yay!! Welcome from me and Lulu! B-rabbit is a cutie pie and we are glad to get to know you and your clan! It sounds like you have your hands full and to decide to add a bunny to the mix is wonderful
I to had bunnies growing up but back then knew nothing! My parents didn’t either and had the essentials for our rabbit too. Our first bunny,first and only pet in general for a long time, was a French lop named Thumper. We housed her in our basement and in a hutch outside. She came to us from a friend and was probably a year old and was litter trained. We had her for 5 years until my parents decided to find a new home for her. They thought bunnies live only about 5 years and didn’t want to have to deal with our bunny passing away on us. They found her a nice new home and I hope, and am sure, she lived a nice happy life.

Now we are all bunny educated!! After I had brought Lulu (holland lop), the current queen of the house, my parents had said, “if we knew a bunny could be like this we would have done this sooner.” It’s amazing what a little education can do So glad you did your research!
