A couple months ago, several of our neighbor’s rabbits escaped from his yard and, as thanks for catching them and taking some to the Humane Society for him since he had too many, he said we could keep whichever ones we wanted. I initially intended to keep only one and find homes for some of them with people I knew would take good care of them, as the experience of simply catching them – which took around two weeks of research and adaptive strategizing – was enlightening. Once I learned just how fragile they were, as well as how many bunnies are neglected, abandoned, or improperly cared for, I became very protective and now they’re my four bunny children. I’m not perfect and it’s been a learning experience, but I’m trying my best. Some days have been happy, some have been very upsetting, others downright terrifying, so I came to Binky Bunny to seek out other bunny parents for advice and to share my enthusiasm. Anyway, here are my babies.
This is Whisper. According to the previous owner, she is a year and three months old. Obviously she’s an adorable Lionhead. She’s a little skittish and will try to bat at you with her paws if you stick your hand near her without warning. She hates loud noises, especially the sound of airplanes, and when I would have to take her out of her cage to clean it in the beginning, she would throw such a fit that I had to wrap her in a pillowcase to make her feel secure, as shown in the first picture. Around two weeks into her being here, I discovered a botfly lump on her neck, removed it, and disinfected the wound, which has now healed. After that, she seemed to trust me and realize that I was someone who was trying to take care of her. Now she allows me to pick her up without a fight and I’ve discovered that she really enjoys snuggling. She’s basically a total sweetheart who loves hugs and just needs a little extra patience and special attention. It’s pretty much impossible to get mad at her for anything ever.
This is Harley, or as I like to call him, Itty-Bit, because he’s tiny. If you couldn’t tell from the resemblance, he’s Whisper’s baby and he’s only a baby, about 3 months old right now. He is so small, I can scoop him up with one hand, but I still use two because he’s a daredevil and we now know to keep an extra close eye on the little munchkin. He likes to hop on top of boxes and sit on them, but he’ll also flop down inside of them, close his eyes, and take a cute little bunny nap. He and his Mama will sometimes try to reach each other and kiss through the bars of their cages, though they can’t be any closer because neither is fixed yet, so we are hoping that once they are both fixed, they can bond and be reunited. I have high hopes since they’ve already shown interest in each other well past his weaning age. He will have to have a couple of growth spurts first, of course.
These guys are Storm and Lullaby, but even though I’m in love with those names and do not intend to change them, I don’t think they could be less fitting. The one in the first photo, looking like a professional bunny model, is Storm. Apart from the natural urges that come along with bunny puberty – I can hardly shame him for that – he’s the most peaceful, gentle, sweet little gentleman who tolerates just about everything. If I have to pick him up to move him to the pen or take stuff out of the boys’ cage to clean it, he doesn’t make a fuss. If I decide I want to cuddle or when I was treating him preventatively for ear mites after I found out my cat had them, he is very patient and tolerant. When I go to put him down on the ground, he doesn’t thrash and waits to put his paws down and walk off quietly. He eats slowly and doesn’t accidentally bite my fingers. Then there’s Lullaby over there on the right, sticking his head out ready to charge. Note that Lullaby isn’t aggressive. He just wants to do things his way. He chatters when he’s not getting his way and when he’s caught making a mess, you’ll never see a bunny look guiltier. Still, he will come up to get a kiss or a few head strokes when he sees me come around. If I stroke his cheek, he’ll give my hand a bath. He loves to sit on my chest when he’s feeling calmer and cuddle, but only for a short time, then he goes about his business. He always has to investigate when he sees someone doing something and he can destroy a toilet paper roll in under a minute.
