Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself and my bunnies, so here it goes! I’ve had rabbits for a little over a year and a half now, my first rabbit being Tuna. Tuna was a tort mini lop that I adopted from an animal shelter, which was the third one he had been through. He was dumped with his “girlfriend” and their babies on Christmas Eve at a shelter in San Francisco, then to SaveaBunny, and then finally to Oakland Animal Shelter. I adopted him because he was just so cute, even though he was incredibly shy and was not shy about thumping!
After a couple months of living with Tuna, I stumbled across Ham. Some kids were selling “snake food” and so when I went to look, I was shocked. It was a baby holland lop bun that looked just like my Tuna, so I quickly paid the $5 they were asking, put the lil bun in my backpack and biked home as quick as I could! After many failed attempts at bonding, I realized that Tuna and Ham were going to be living as bachelors, and hoped that maybe one day in the distant future, they might put aside their differences and cuddle up. I never got to really see this happen, as on Jan 1st (2012) Tuna died from G.I. Stasis. I was completely heartbroken to come home from work to see my baby like that, and the image still haunts me. While Tuna was never the friendliest or affectionate rabbit, he was my first pet where I was the only caregiver, and I grew to really love his “Eeyore” personality (complete with lop ears!) But I did realize that his loss could perhaps be a somewhat positive thing, because I could finally find a companion for Ham, who as a youngster, always seemed a little lonely.
I started taking Ham for bunny dates at HRS headquarters, but he was very shy and scared around the females there, and seemed to be more of a people-bunny then a bunny-bunny. I did look on Petfinder and found a pretty cute couple of mini lops at an spca that doesn’t usually have rabbits, so I took a drive to meet the little solo girl. She had come in with her mother, father, and 2 brothers, and all were spayed and the parents returned to the family. She had always had their companionship but after her brothers started non stop humping her, the spca decided she should be separated. I knew she could be a great girlfriend to Ham because of her really easy going personality, and I was right, considering bonding only took about 2 weeks before they started having sleep overs! Her name is now Peach and she’s a funny lil girl, always on the hunt for food, and scaring my to death with her crazy antics! (jumping into my trash can and eating an orange peel as well as jumping into the hay bin and getting trapped)
An aquaintance heard about Tuna’s death and told me about a baby bun that had been dumped on him by a coworker. The bun was a French Lop baby, about 4 months, who was originally purchased to breed meat rabbits ( ! ) I’ve always wanted a Frenchie, so I took him in and named him Oscar. He was such a sweetie, gave me my first bunny licks and loved binkying and flopping. I scheduled him to get neutered but he died from seizures two days after the surgery. I am still completely in shock, and am having a hard time coping with a second loss in less then 2 months, especially since he was becoming my cuddle bunny. His little panda – mustached face will be missed dearly.
To cope with the losses I decided to foster a bunny, so that hopefully the next time I say goodbye to an animal it will be on happy terms. I got my foster bunny today, I am not sure how old he is, but somewhere between 7-9 monthes most likely, and he seems to have come from a very neglectful situation. He has brown hocks from pee, and a bit of hair loss or some sort of deformity on the side of his face, making him look like he’s snarling or something, but I think its pretty cute. He doesn’t have a name yet but I’m leaning towards Marlin, because of his pretty blue/grey color. He’s a typically young bunny, pretty shy and timid at first, but very outgoing and adventurous when given time. He looks pretty content right now after filling up on rabbit pellets (they were giving him hamster food at the city shelter he came from!) and hay, and I gave him a little taste of baby bok choy . Can’t wait to get to know him and get him into a forever home!
