Someone from Peoria contacted the HRS.  So I was asked to get in touch with her since I’m local as she was wanting some help with nail clipping and stuff.  I’m not sure how she ended up with WuWu, her holland lop.  She said he had been through about 6 homes.  She didn’t really want him and would love to find him a home, but she’s an animal activist and is picky about who takes him.  She posted ads but put a $25 price so she didn’t have just anyone calling about him.  I don’t believe she is feeding him pellets.  Just hay and veggies.  She has 4 dogs and 4 cats and from what it sounds like, she feeds them fresh foods, not processed.  She believes WuWu is approximately 6 years old.  And yes, I will be asking about his name.  lol

She was given info from the HRS from another friend who went to an animal rights conference or something.  She has him in a pen and gives him free time.  He sounds friendly enough – doesn’t like being picked up, but loves pets.  He tries to be friends with her cats and dogs.  She seems very responsible about pet ownership.  I don’t think she allows him and her other pets to be alone or out at the same time.  She mentioned he pokes his nose through the pen when the other animal are around.

So I will be meeting her and WuWu tomorrow and helping her with clipping his nails and any other problems he might have.  Or answering questions.  I would love to be able to take WuWu but I can’t right now.  She’s not pushing him on me or anything.  If the opportunity came up, she would rehome him, but in the meantime, he’s part of the family.    I just want another bunny as you all know.  lol  But as I’m going to be moving in with my dad, he would flip out if I took him.  LOL  I will update on how it goes tomorrow!

It sounds like he’s well taken care of with her. Hopefully you can offer some guidance and encourage her to give him a chance.

So I went and met the lady.  She is really nice.  She’s an animal activist and vegan and whatnot.  She’s taken in and rehomed a few pets.

First off, Wuwu has the same coloring as Eddie.   But he is a mess.  He has poopy butt, he sits in his urine, and he has a gunky eye.  I suggested a few times about him needing a vet.  I even mentioned that HRS might help with some of the cost.  She’s an elderly lady who’s active and everything, but I imagine she’s on a fixed income.  She said she has about all she can handle in regards to pets.  When I left, she mentioned that she should take him in to get his teeth looked at.   Wuwu hasn’t been eating much.

He’s in a pen and she lets him out but the area is not ideal.  She puts carefresh type bedding down in his carrier but then she has puppy pads down and a larger cage bottom with a wire piece down.  He apparently doesn’t eat much which if he has some type of infection or tooth problem, that would be why.  He’s active when he’s out.  He was hopping around quite a bit when I was there but then he went back into his carrier.  It’s a larger carrier/crate that she just uses as a house for him.   She thinks he has an incontinence problem but I think he simply doesn’t know where to go.

I clipped his nails and cleaned up his poopy butt.  I recommended either a butt bath or using the corn starch to help with cleaning him.

I know she is doing the best she can but I just feel like crying right now.  I wanted to bring him home so bad, but there’s no way I can do that.  So I think I’ll just email next week or something and see how things are going.

(I also may feel like crying because he looked like Eddie, only with darker ears. )

How sad! It’s so great that you’re helping this lady. I really hope she gets him to a vet and maybe finds him a new home, since it seems like his life there isn’t the best. It seems like she’s a caring person though which makes her likely to take your advice and really try to make his life better.

Oh. I didn’t realize she was older with so many pets. There’s a fine line betw/ rescuing and truly having more than you can reasonably care for. With her rescue connections, I wonder if they can help place the rabbit in another foster home?

I don’t know if they can or not. But I emailed the Chicago HRS just to see if they could maybe help with the vet cost. I don’t know of any shelters/rescues in the area or even remotely close who deals with small animals. I know our local humane society shelter does but I don’t know that they would spend the money to get WuWu better. They don’t get a lot of rabbits or other small animals. So we’ll see.

This is a wonderful place that might be worth contacting. Critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary. They are in German Valley, IL. I know that’s still a hike from where you are. They have permanent residents and they do adoptions. Here’s their website. http://www.crittercamp.org/
I find that their facebook page is more user friendly than their website though.

Yeah, that’s kind of a crazy site in terms of layout and stuff. lol But thank you! I am looking into that.
