Help With Breed Selection?

I was blessed this past year with a little bunny. My parents surprised me with him, so I don’t know what breed he was. But I assume he had some sort of Netherland Dwarf in him maybe mixed with something else. He was only 1.9 pounds when he died and he had a very small frame. Unfortunately when I had him for only 4 months, he got e. cunniculi and died. 



I have mourned him and I am now in the market for a new bunny, but I get to pick what breed this time. I was wondering what everyone suggested. My Finn was very social, he was out all of the time and loved to give kisses and sit on my lap. I am looking for a breed that has a high likelihood of having a similar temperament. Size isn’t a large concern of mine, but if I could choose, I would probably say I’d like a smaller rabbit. As long as it’s not Flemish Giant size, I should be fine (:

I would suggest that if you have a rabbit rescue or shelter nearby that you look at rescued rabbits. Temperament is not something that rabbits are bred for so every rabbit will be different. Meeting a rescue rabbit who is probably going to be full grown and spayed or neutered is the best way to help determine (somewhat) what their temperament will be like.

It is my understanding that there are certain character traits more likely in certain breeds of rabbits-but obviously that’s not a given. Really, even with dogs or cats, or an animal more likely to be bred for character-those particular animals don’t always have those given traits. I have a mini rex who weighed 2.3 lbs. at her last vet apt. and she is very friendly, curious, active, and loves to be petted-not so much picked up. I have a holland lop who will likely end up under 4 lbs. and she is sweet, but more nervous, and has a quieter personality. I think they are both good breeds and you can look them up on the internet. I think it’s great to get rabbits from shelters but not everyone has a rabbit shelter nearby and regardless, someone brought that rabbit into the world-whether it comes from a shelter, a breeder, a pet store, or a friend, and if you can love it, take care of it, and give it a good home I think that’s great! I agree with the others! Check out rescues to see what bunnies they have available. It’s better to pick based on the individual rabbit rather than blindly choosing a breed. Let us know how it goes!

I definitely concur with those who have suggested rescuing a bunny from a local shelter – adopted bunnies are the best!

And, as others have said, certain traits are a bit more common in some breeds than others, but that’s no guarantee of anything! It’s much less specified than it is with dogs. Theodore is apparently the “typical” Dutch – gentle and extremely social but not overly affectionate, sorta discerning and sassy, and wayyyy too smart for his own good. Duchies are great. <3

But all rabbits have their own individual personalities that tend to be informed by things other than their breed. I suggest visiting as many as you can at shelters – schedule meetings or ask to sit with them if they’re available to be sat with – and you’ll find the perfect fuzzy friend!
