Help! What is wrong with my bunny?!

Let me start this post by saying…it is midnight here in Michigan. I will be taking my bun to the vet first thing in the morning! In the meantime I can’t sleep trying to figure out what happened to my boy!

I had my bun belly up on my lap while I trimmed his nails, and noticed what I thought was weird shaped squished poo stuck around his anal region. I grabbed a warm wet wash cloth and went to work removing the “poo” and realised that it was not poo, but his scrotum. It has somehow died and hardened. Some of it fell right off, and because I’m a moron, there is a small tear in his skin where it was still connected. As soon as I noticed the tearing I stopped and realised what I was pulling on! I have owned rabbits for twenty years and I have never seen or heard of anything like this before. He is 4 years old and was neutered about 3 1/2 years ago.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

It can happen to rabbit’s ears if they hurt their ears. It’s dry necrosis and it means the body part has got cut off from circulation and shrivels up and falls off. In humans it can happen to diabetics’ smaller toes. As long as the body part just shrivels up and dries, it’s ok (under the circumstances). A vet can make sure the margins of healthy tissue around the lost body part are healthy or cut to healthy tissue if needed, because you do not want an infection there. For now you can rinse the tear in his skin with saline (normal eyewash for humans will do fine), your vet will probably give him an antibiotic and maybe some ointment to put on. They’ll of course make an assessment if surgery or stiching is needed.

Does he seem otherwise ok? Alert, willing to take a treat, pooping and all that?

That is odd, but I agree with Bam. I don’t know what area you live in, but I’d highly recommend Dr. Hagewood at Canton Center Animal Hospital.
