HELP URGENT

Hello, my pet rabbit Bella has been sick the last few days, she had fleas about a week ago and the vet gave us medicine for it, they’re gone now but a couple days after I noticed her nose was swollen and snot was coming out. I took her back to the vet and he gave us medicine and said this is a common flu in rabbits. She should be fine soon and feed it to her for 14 days. The next day her nose was bleeding and her bottom was very sore and red. Today she can’t even stand up in her cage and her breathing is so loud. She has barely eaten in 2 days and she’s Flemish so she’s generally big. I can see her bones almost now.

As I said in my PM, loud breathing, emaciation and weakness could mean she has developed pneumonia. You need to take her back to the vet and get her supportive care and possibly IV antibiotics and a decongestant. Most rabbits that have a snotty nose get well with a course of antibiotics, but in some buns, the infection goes further, into their lungs or ears – everything is connected in there. I suggest you call your vet right away.

How old is she? Is she still fairly young? She sounds full grown?
For her nose, she could possible have Snuffles, but I’ve never heard of nose bleeds occurring with it. As for her feet, it sounds like she has Podermatis. Does she sit in her urine a lot? If she sits in her urine a lot, and has a wire bottomed cage that could be it. You might also want to ask about a UTI. In either case, it sounds like your bun needs to be at the vet immediately.

She needs a vet right away! This sounds like it is progressing very rapidly and it’s very important you get her to the vet!!

So sorry for your loss!! It’s absolutely tragic, but it also should serve as an example of how quickly things can turn for the worse. Maybe more people will read this and know to take minor illnesses seriously as they can progress to be much worse. Maybe Bella’s story will help an owner in the future know to respond quickly and maybe save somebunnys life. I can’t imagine what you feel right now, but Bella sounded like she was in a lot of pain and hopefully she has exited this world peacefully.

Thanks, everyone <3 I hope my baby is having fun up there with every bunny, maybe even with her mom and dad. Or a past friend you've had! As for what happened to me, Take action IMMEDIATELY. Don’t be stupid like me. If you have a vet or not I recommend getting the attention of the one closest to you quick. Bunnies are prey animals so when they’re sick they act as if they are not until they can’t do that anymore. I feel that happened with my rabbit and she couldn’t handle it anymore. If you feel the bunny is acting strange or off do something quick! My parents weren’t home and work quite far from my house so I couldn’t do anything. If I could go back I would call 911, at least I could get some type of help. Once again thanks, I know she’s not in pain anymore.

You were in a difficult situation and it is hard to think of all options when you are greatly stressed and worried. Please don’t be too hard on yourself now. Yo hu may keep coming up with ” I should have done this” or “shouldn’t have done this” scenarios with benefit of hind sight. That probably normal. I know I did this for months after losing a rabbit. Just make sure you take the time to look back on the life she had and not focus too much on these last hours. xx

I made an account here as fast I could to seek help because I noticed her this morning and all the other ones required money to ask simple questions. Thank you devs for this, jersey girl thanks, I am getting those thoughts but I guess they’re natural I agree I will look at her entire life with me not the last few days. 

**TIP FROM ME** Bella was only 2 and all this happened, age is a serious problem but remember a rabbit can be any age.

I didn’t realise so many places cost money to sign up. Binky Bunny has always wanted to keep this forum free and accessible. A safe place for people to seek help or offer help. [editedby jerseygirl!]

Im sorry things turned bad for Bella so quickly. Please feel free to talk about her, what she was like, share pics. Anything that helps you. One of the forum leaders (RabbitPam) registered here many years ago after her 8 yr old rabbit passed away. It was a place you could share with others who loved rabbits a much as she loved hers. It was a full year before she adopted another fluffer, but she was able to get her “rabbit fix” here and help new owners with her experience of having been a rabbit slave.
