› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Help! Possible to GI stasis?
I hope I’m just over worrying but usually when I come home my bunny is super hyper and happy to see me as he usually gets a nice leafy romaine lettuce and sometimes a baby carrot and has always been this way.
Tonight however when I get home he’s curled up in his litter box. Normally I wouldn’t mind but almost none of his hay was touched and most of his water wasn’t drunk. Usually after a full day of work when I come home 90% of his hay and water are gone. Also he appears kinda sluggish. He just lays there and most he moves is changing positions to lay down. Normally he squirms a bit when I pick him up and today he was calm as can be. On top of it usually when I set him in my lap he’ll only stay for 30 seconds before off to an adventure. Today he stayed for 30 minutes and no poo either which he does religiously on me.
After extensive Google searching I’m worried it’s GI stasis.. Any veterans able to give me some insight?
Not a veteren but ive certainly had mine like this before.
Try some abdominal massage. If he stays put for massage and seems to get comfort, that will tell you its definitely his gut. possibly some gas. Massage is really useful here. However, if his tummy feels super tight, dont massage & get him seen asap.
You can also try popping him on a vibrating pad or chair if you have one. Some have even used an electric shaver with attachments off and held that against the tummy.
Simithecone can also give relief and is safe for them to have. I.e. baby gasX drops, Ovol, De-Gas etc
I would probably make a vet appointment just in case you don’t see a turn around.
{{{Vibes}}} for a happier bunny.
So I spent the last 40 minutes giving him a belly massage and he seemed content not moving. However he just doesn’t seem like he has much energy..
When I put him back into his pen to relax he doesn’t even move more than an inch or two.
I even tried to syringe feed him some water and not sure if I’m doing it wrong but most of it doesn’t seem like it’s going in and drips out. 🙁
Ay update? How is your bun today?
If he isn’t better this morning- I would take him to the vet. Is he moving his legs? Does he seem kind of floppy? I don’t want to alarm you- but my bunny Tofu was not moving much and refusing to eat Saturday morning. He was kind of floppy- like I could do anything with him and he didn’t mind. He died that afternoon. It was heartbreaking. I had brought him to the vet- she didn’t know what was wrong with him. Tofu died 20 minutes after we came home. Someone on BB thought it may have been floppy rabbit syndrome. I googled it and it could have been. If your bunny isn’t better- please go to the vet today.
I had to Google that but he doesn’t seem too floppy or limp. More just weak and Lethargic.
He still hasn’t eaten or pooped yet so I’m taking him to the vet in two hours when they open.
Only plus side is that he at least drank water in the night however he seemed to just dip his front legs into the water and barely drink much. 🙁
Good luck & please post progress!
Vet just said he has a respiratory infection and possible GI statis
Said they have to do a nose/tongue culture. Said they need to start him on antibiotics and liquid food w/ electrolyte water and syringe feed him for the 3-5 days. By that time, if his body can fight it, he’ll be better in 5 days….otherwise he’s gonna get a whole lot worse before passing
Well- that sounds encouraging… It could have been a lot worse! The antibiotics and feeds may be just what he needs to build up his strength and fight the infection! Wishing you luck and positive vibes for your little in!
That sounds very promising….. many of the members have been through similar with great success… Sending positive vibes for a full recovery.
Just a sad update..
He seemed to be responding to medication at the docs but while taking home he started freaking out. We pulled off to the side of the road as he was throwing himself against his carrying cage. I took him out in hopes of calming him and he had what looked like a seizure and passed. :'(
I am so sorry Buddy20. I know how devastating that can be. My thoughts are with you and your little bunny going over the Rainbow Bridge… Binky Free Bunny!
I’m sorry.
That must have been devastating. Here too short a time but well loved!
Binky Free little one.
Thank you all for your support and well wishes. I would post a picture of him on here but I’m not quite sure how.
I think it just more traumatizing that he quite literally died in my arms in the car. ![]()
Yes, I imagine that would be very difficult thing to witness. The seizure sounds like what happens right before a rabbit passes. That is normal. Though distressing for you to see.
A small comfort but he likely didnt feel that. He went from loving arms & on his way. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.
I’ve PM’d you about adding a photo.
What a cutie! Prayers for you both. ?
Thank you for the prayers and Jersey girl for posting the pictures
I’m so very, very sorry about the passing of your adorable baby. He was obviously very loved and I’m sure he knew that.
