So, I finally have a good amount of money in my savings account.  Yay.

I’ve been saving up for a scooter.  It would be great for riding around town and the gas mileage would be awesome.  But my parents are buying a house right now and I will be moving back in with them.  The house comes with all appliances… minus the washer and dryer.

I have enough money that I could afford EITHER a scooter or the washer & dryer.  I feel like since I’m moving in, I should contribute.  The scooter seems like much more of a “fun” purchase, but it has some good points for it, too.

        SCOOTER PROS

        – Much cheaper insurance (my parents pay my car insurance right now for me)

        – License/registration cheaper

        – Repairs WAY cheaper (my parents help with expensive repairs for my car, it’s a 1997 so expensive repairs kinda happen often)

        – Tires and maintenance cheaper.

        – Gas WAY cheaper, my gas budget would plummet so I’d have more money to help with household expenses.

        SCOOTER CONS

        – It’s basically like a big toy.

        – Can’t use it in winter.

        – Can’t use it for long distances (small scoot, top speed about 40mph)

        – Kinda dangerous compared to my car

        WASHER/DRYER PROS

        – Can help my parents with a larger expense when they’re putting money down on a house, paying for house inspections, etc.

        – Since I won’t be paying rent for awhile (I’ll be helping with bills and eventually paying half the mortgage, but not right away), it’ll be a way to contribute.

        – My parents have helped me financially a lot, it’d be great to help them back.

        WASHER/DRYER CONS

        – One time purchase, wouldn’t save money long-term.

        – My budget wouldn’t be able to afford really nice washer/dryer, they’d probably be “econo-line” types.

What do you guys think?  This whole being an adult thing isn’t much fun sometimes.

Well, I guess the washer and dryer is a must have and if you bought it it would definately help your parents out financially. However, depending on how much use you would get out of the scooter, it might be worth crunching numbers to see how much gas money you could save that way. How much time do you have until the house is ready? Maybe you can save up enough until then to buy a used washer/dryer online? Or if it needs to be new you could at least contribute to it with whatever amount you saved in gas.

Hubby and I keep fantasizing about buying a Honda Ruckus, it’s got some bang for your buck!

Scooters can be a lot of fun and are a great method of transport over short distances, but I just wanted to remind you that they are still a motorized vehicle going 40mph, and should be ridden with proper protection including a helmet. I got in an accident on a scooter just a few months ago, and ended up going to the ER for stitches on my foot and not being able to walk for a couple of months. Not very fun at all. My fault for wearing flip flops though, heh.

Yeah, I should probably sit down and figure out how much I’d be saving with the scooter, and would it compare to just buying them a washer/dryer outright.

The Honda Ruckus is one of the scoots I’m considering!  That or the Honda Metropolitan.  I’m also looking at tha Yamaha Zuma, or the Yamaha Vino.

                I’m a huge safety proponent.  I’d never ride without a helmet and over-the-ankle shoes/boots.

Those are some nice choices. Personally I’d either go with the Ruckus or the Vino (very cute)!

Another Con about the scooter is that you can’t take Zeus on it if you need to take him to the vet or have an emergency!

But I have always wanted a scooter too. And I would probably buy that if I was in your situation.

Hmm. The vino is about $2200, if you have that much saved, could you find a scooter that is maybe $2000 or so and a second hand washer/dryer from a used appliance store and just get both? We only paid $300 for our washer/dryer and we’ve had them for over 5 years, they get our clothes clean and oh well they weren’t brand new, they were a lot cheaper than getting them brand new. Then you could both help your parents with ones that will hold them over until they can afford the nice ones they want, with all the cool features and get your toy.

Oh wow, really?  I thought they were a lot more than that.  I’ll have to check that out!  If I can find a pair for that price I could possibly do both.

I have a car for any type of situation the scoot wouldn’t work for.  ie, vet visits.

Washers and dryers are cheap – we got new ones for our apartment (for some reason they didn’t come with the unit) for under $500 for both. You don’t need a top of the line model and I don’t notice any difference between the super expensive ones we have now (came with the house) vs the cheap ones, except that we use a little bit less detergent (not enough to really notice though).

So I’m with Sticker on this – get the washer/dryer, and find a cheaper, maybe used, scooter.

Yeah I never noticed much of a difference in expensive ones and cheaper ones. Expensive ones are a little quieter (but we have a laundry room, so I don’t need a super quiet pair), use a little less energy and water and have some features the cheaper ones don’t. But, if you just want your clothes clean, they all do that. And $2000 more for the features the high end models offer never quite seemed worth it to me.

Thanks for all the input guys! That’s a fantastic compromise. Used, slightly older scooter. And used washer/dryer.

When you got to “can’t ride it in winter” you lost me on the scooter. Without the ability to protect you in the elements, carry any loads or objects (or bunnies), and no get up and go, I think it’s a short term investment at best. I’d almost rather see you start shopping around for a better used car. You can pay your own insurance and either car repairs or car loan payments for something really reliable for a couple of years.

It’s really nice of you to want to get the washer/dryer instead. What do your folks plan to do to wash without them? If you don’t get that, you can also set aside $ to do your wash routinely at a laundromat, so it’s not an issue for them either. Or you could buy just a washer and forgo a dryer to save for your current car maintenance. (A new bike is less than $150, so you could ride one instead of a scooter.)

Unfortunately my budget for a QUALITY used car is inadequate.  Hence looking at scooters.

My parents were planning on buying the washer/dryer, but I was going to buy them instead as a surprise or something.    Anyway I can help offset expenses during an expensive time (buying a house is never cheap, LOL).

Don’t forget to figure in the fact that you won’t need to pay for laundromats and such if you get a washer and dryer. They can be quite expensive, and annoying, and takes up a ton of time. Time is money

Oh believe me, I sure know that.  I’ve lived in dorms or apartments the past 7 years or so.  I’m SO SICK of laundromats.

Ummm….have you checked out Illinois laws regarding scooters? Not to burst your bubble but you might have to take a motorcycle class to be able to get a motorcycle license (which is what scooters/mopeds fall under). And since it will need plates to be able to drive on roads, you will need insurance.

I am really not trying to bring you down. But this hasn’t been brought up. These are added costs from the initial purchase. Check out this site or you can get more info at the dmv. http://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/other-types.php

Yup I’ve already checked out the laws.  Any scooters with an engine size of 50cc and under don’t require a motorcycle license, and that’s the size scoot I’m looking at.  I’ve also researched insurance, and it’s pretty cheap.

Hello! Long time forum lurker and proud scooter rider from Illinois here. I have a 2009 Piaggio Fly 50 which is technically a 49 cc… but was told by my local DMV that I do still need a class L motorcycle license to ride legally. Just something to watch out for. The plate renewal sticker is $35 a year and I pay about $112 a year for insurance. So far I love my scooter and haven’t regretted the purchase. It’s been amazing and starts right up every spring after sitting in a garage all winter with the battery plugged into a tender. Bunnies and scooters! Two of my favorite things.

I don’t think it’s that bad to get your motorcycle license though! My brother got his and he shouldn’t be legal to drive a car, he’s so not mechanically or spatially inclined lol
