I went to the doctor today and got diagnosed with mono. I know most illnesses can’t be passed from hoomans to buns but I couldn’t find anything on mono. I love my Henry so much and cuddling him is just a part of my daily routine. Does anyone know if I can pass mono to my bunny? Thanks so much in advance

I wouldn’t think so. But what do I know

            Get well soon!

I actually found a scientific article that claims that human mononucleosis can be transferred to rabbits. The rabbits in the study were purposely inoculated with the virus, ie the virus was applied into their nose or mouth, so they weren’t infected by being near humans that had mono. I think you’d have to kiss your rabbit to transfer the virus to him, so you should perhaps refrain from kissing him until you’re well again. A major route of transfer from human to human is via kisses, (hence the name “kissing disease”).

The study just says the rabbits were infected and made antibodies/expressed virus DNA, not that they actually got any mono symptoms that could be detected without lab testing. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20419811

So from this information do you think that my bunny could get sick from me?

I think bam is telling you that this study was based on intentionally infecting the rabbits to see if it was possible…so it is possible… I would err on the side of caution just to be safe. Make sure that bun doesn’t have contact with your saliva and wash your hands when petting and feeding.

I think it’s technically possible, but highly unlikely. Unless he has a compromised immune system for some reason.

Yes, as BunNoob and LBJ says. Highly unlikely, but to be extra safe, don’t kiss him on his nose/mouth area.

Thank you guys so much! It sucks not being able to come home and cuddle him and give him kisses but I’ll just have to hold out for now! I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t putting him in any danger because he’s my fur baby ☺️?. Thanks for your help!
