HELP!!!

Hey everyone – this morning I was just waking up, when I heard a loud thrashing and thumping sound from timothy’s cage (which, thank god, is in my room). I immediately rushed over, still rubbing sleep out of my eyes. When I constructed Timothy’s cage, I added a cloth hammock of my own making. Throughout the months, he has chewed a hole in it, which he uses as an extra exit. It was fun for him to hop in and out of his hammock and through the hole, so I never did anything to alter the hammock. However, today definitely changed my mind. When I got there, Timothy had one of his hocks (left, i think) looped and twisted in the hammock, and he was thrashing on the floor of his cage! He had knocked over his food and water, so he was wet, too!! I calmed him down and detached/cut the hammock, then untangled his foot. Currently, he is wrapped in a blanket on my lap. He seems to want to move around, but I’m too afraid to let him! He is wet, as I said before, and I know rabbits can be killed from the shock of a bath. WHAT DO I DO??!!

Aw poor little thing Try and dry him off as much as possible with a soft towel or even a hair dryer if he’ll allow it?

I’m keeping him warm and wrapped up, so I think he’s drying.

If he’s wanting to move around, hopefully (fingers crossed!!!!) the shock is wearing off – it’s good you were there to help him right away. Is he acting like he wants to eat something? Have you tried feeding him hay or a favorite treat yet? Also, does he appear to have taken any injury to his leg or foot from the mishap?

I will try to feed him some pellets or veggies. We put him on my bedroom floor and when he went a few paces and then stopped. It looked like he was favoring his left hind leg. My mom thinks that if we put a lot of extra padding in his cage, he’ll be fine, but even on my bed on the blanket it looks painful when he hops.

Keep an eye on that. He might have sprained his leg/foot or something like that. Do you have a rabbit-savvy vet nearby?

I do have a vet, I was planning to take them both in next Friday to be neutered. I am not 100% sure, but I think the rabbit vet may only be in on Fridays.

His cage is an NIC connected to an xpen, so his “hide” was always the corner of the NIC, however my mother suggested I keep him confined to a smaller area so I can monitor him, also so that he doesn’t have to hop into the cage.

I turned on relaxing rabbit music (idk if it works) and my bunny has flopped behind me on my bed.

I think that’s probably wise. Just keep an eye on him and make sure he eats and poops as he normally would.

Oh, that’s a good sign.  If he’s flopping (being relaxed and happy), then I think he’s already starting to get over the shock and annoyance of being doused and falling out of his hammock. Keep doing what you’re doing, give him lots of love, dry him as best you can with soft towels, offer him a favorite treat, and keep an eye on that leg/foot – if he’s still favoring it, I’d take him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Not always but often a bun in pain will stop eating so that’s why it’s important to monitor that. If he’s eating okay and isn’t lethargic I would assume he isn’t in pain. You know your bun best tho so just look out for any changes.

He’s up now, but grooming (which is also a good sign I think). He is almost completely dry, and I will be sure to give him extra love! I guess there’s nothing else to ask, everyone has been so helpful. I still feel like I need to ask questions, but I guess I’m more worried than my bunny is lol

There’s no really rabbit safe OTC analgesics for bunnies. They can tolerate aspirin, but I think it’s safest not to give it because it can harm the stomach. Medirabbit says a dose of 10-100 mg/kg can be given:

Ok, I will be sure to watch his eating habits. If he isn’t eating I’ll rush him to the vet right away

Good to hear he’s getting back to normal, and yep, I’d definitely say grooming is good. I guess all you need to do now is to keep a weather eye on his hock and observe whether he’s still having trouble moving on it. If something like that ever happens to Panda or Fernando once they move in with me, I’ll probably be a nervous wreck even when they’ve gotten themselves back in good order and are watching me hyperventilate with bemused expressions!

Haha! He is still favoring his hock, but not as much. I put him on the floor so he doesn’t have to jump down, and he is moving much more. I am going to set up his cage now, so I will keep everyone updated.

I never knew rabbits could have hammocks (rhyme but for safety I wouldn’t give the rabbit one, to me that’s more a pet rodent thing. Why don’t you add shelves and staires in the rabbits cage and a hide . Because stress can kill a rabbit instantly . I would recommend the shelves as rabbits are prey animals they do feel safer at a height
This is just an opinion but they’d be safer than the hammock .

Update:
Timothy is looking much better. He has been eating, drinking, and using the bathroom normally. I’m assuming this means he is not in pain. I no longer see any favoring of his hock, so I think it was maybe just a small temporary injury. We are going to the vet next week, so if there is any long-term injury they should be able to tell us then. Thank you so much for all of your help everyone!!!
Pinkbun – I know shelves are a good option, but at the time, Timothy absolutely loved his hammock. It was stimulating for him, and sometimes he’d even just sleep in it. From now on, I will definitely not be using a hammock, ever again. This experience was wayyyy too scary.
Anyways, it’s all over now, and my bun made it through. I truly could not have done it without everyone who helped keep me calm lol and helped my bunny.
