› Forum › THE LOUNGE › WELCOME ! › Hello, New Member Here!!
Hello All! I want to start with saying that I absolutely love this site!! I have been researching and reading and this site has been one of the most informative by far!!!! I have been stalking this site for about two weeks and became a member the other day. My family and I will be picking up our baby in 1 1/2 weeks!!! So excited. I have had bunnies in the past but as outside pets. I ran my own Pet Sitting company for 10 years and have cared for animals of all types including bunnies. But this will my my first house bunny, and I gotta say, I am thrilled to have found like minded people who see their bunnies as babies and family members not JUST Animals. Not many people in my local area view their dogs as more than animals let alone a rabbit….myself I find animals to be more enjoyable to be around then most people…lol.
So anyway, I wanted to drop in and introduce myself….My name is Christi, my family consists of myself, my husband, my 14 year old daughter and our 2 year old German Shepherd. We are located in South Jersey. We chose to go with a Flemish and connected with a breeder a couple weeks back that cares very much for her animals and is picky about home placement. She has approved us to be a proud bunny family and the litters she has will be ready soon.
Once we bring our baby home I will post information about him/her and pictures.
I will most likely be chatting with you kind folks and asking questions as our lives together start and continue for many happy years
Welcome, Christi. We’ve got a few members with Flemmies, so you’ll be in good company.
Can’t wait to meet your gentle giant (we luuurv pictures)
Hello there and welcome to the forum I must say that your excitement is contagious! I think I would like to own a Flemmie one day, but not at this stage. You have certainly come to the right place for like-minded people though, I am much the same as you though and often prefer the company of animals to people.
I’m looking forward to when you bring bunny home and we can see some pictures
Welcome to the forums, Christi!
I have a German Shepherd too, she’s great around the buns. We do have a few Flemishowning members here and most of us are in awe, secretly or not so secretly =)
Hey Christi LFB80 !! Welcome !!
Yes Mz Azerane is right – contagious is the word – I was smiling reading your post !!
i don’t have a Flemie but I do have a big bun…. they’re lovely.
Talking about flemmies, no news from Billy Down Under recently ??
Enjoy and PLEASE DO keep us informed… with piccies and updates
If you’ve been lurking here, you must have seen LPT’s photos of her little girl and her big white rabbit Sterling ! Makes for lovely pics !
Thank you everybody for the warm welcome!
I will definitely be updating with pics as soon as we get our little (but not for long) bundle of fur
The past couple of days I have been picking up and ordering things to get my buns home all ready for his/her arrival. We are starting out with an extra large dog crate with x-pen set up. (approx. 7 ft x 4ft or 28 sq ft of bunny space….I will attach pics once done) After he/she is all litter trained and familiar with our home we will expand our exploration (safely of course)!!
One thing is for sure…this week will not pass quick enough…. I swear it’s like my days are moving in slow motion on purpose since I am looking forward to “Bunny Day” as my daughter and I call it!
@Vienna Blue: yes I have seen LPT’s photo’s…as well as almost everybody else’s…lol…like I said i have been stalking. All I can say is that I couldn’t find one bunny that I didn’t want to smooch! lol
Anyways…I have to get back to my chores so I will take my leave….again thank you all and I look forward to chatting some more in the coming weeks, months, years
Nothing quite as exciting as setting up and getting supplies for a new bunny!
Hi and Welcome to BB!!!!!! As mentioned, I have a big boy who I believe is part Flemish. He’s about 9-10 lbs. Big buns are so much fun!!!! Looking forward to your pics.
Vienna- Bindi wanted me to tell you that he’s a boy and that he is forever begrudging his Mom for giving him a girly name….
So guys we are 3 days away from Bunny Day!!!
I completed my “mock up” of the new buns home. Let me know what you think, am I on the right track? Is something missing or maybe a risk that I missed?
Any advice would be great!
Again this is just a quick mock up to get an idea of what I have.
Thank you!

It looks pretty great to me.
It must be so hard to have to wait a few more days now that you’re ready. lol
Q8…you have no idea…I keep coming on here and reading the stories and looking at pictures and just can’t wait!!!
Welcome to the dark side. We have hay.
LPT – I was talking about E !!!!! rofl !!!!! (Sterling part Flemish? I thought he was NZ?)
That setup is amazing! Lucky bun!
Haha, Vienna—ooops. lol….As for Sterling I really find he looks more like a Flemmie but since his size is small for a flemmie I’m assuming a mix. I’ve read that white NZ’s never have brown eyes. So I really don’t know but my best guess is Flemmi mix so that’s what I’m going with officially.
A Flemzealand then
Or a Flemmieland
Hey can you link the items where you bought the cage with the pen???? I have been trying to find one but that set up is exactly the one I’m looking for!
Wow, the set up looks amazing! I love that blue paw print fleece
Good selection of toys, two litter boxes I’m not sure if you have anything on the surface of the shelf, but you may need to clip a fleece in place on it so it’s not slippery when he jumps up and down on it. Also I can’t tell, but what’s that beige thing behind the water bottle?
I suppose only time will tell if he decides to jump over the fence, but he may also try to jump on top of the dog crate, so just keep that in mind. It could pose a risk if he attempts it with just the bars there, but then again, putting something to make it a solid surface may only encourage him to try.
the cage is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QAVNYGK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
the pen is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F97RHQE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(I positioned them the way I wanted them and used carabiners to connect them…this way I can easily adjust/take apart/and so on.)
the shelf is actually the divider that that crate came with…my husband cut it in half for me…I then put a piece of cardboard on it and wrapped it in fabric. I am in the process of finishing the the other half which will become a ramp.
the beige thing behind the water bottle…if we are talking about the same thing is a reversible fleece square mini blanket
as far as the jumping over the fence, I though about that after the fact and I ordered a taller pen. I figured this would be ok until that one comes later this week. this set up is for his/her private space and as soon as he/she is litter trained I would love to be able to allow bunny to roam with the fence open. (rooms bunny proofed of course )
I also have plans to make a sort of table top for the top of the crate, just haven’t gotten there yet.
Thank you for reviewing the picture and giving the suggestions and pointers, very much appreciated
PS. Tomorrow is bring home bunny day!!
LFB : Just as an idea to how high buns can jump these are stills taken from a video when I just caught Zou in ‘Houdini mode’
I wouldn’t have believed it if i didn’t see it with my own eyes – I couldn’t understand how she was getting to the other side of the raised fence I made.
She did have a wall to ‘climb’ up like cats do’ (photo 2) – but she also boinged up quite happily from a pericscope position too – so just a warning to cover up your top of cage and even the top of xpen if needs be to begin with… (I’m not convinced today’s Zou at 6kg could do that now – she was a teenager then!)… photo 1 is her in full stretch checking out her escape route, so you can see how high she jumped above her full length !
Wow, Vienna, what an amazing thing to catch on “film”!
Ok everybody….DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!
the long awaited introduction of our new fur baby…..
I would like you all to meet Sage our female flemmie
@Vienna: Thank you for that heads up!! I will definitely be making some changes to keep our girl safe!!
Pics of Sage saying hi to her new big brother Walker
Welcome to the fourm! I have a mixed rabbit that is mainly dutch named Hopper. Your setup is awesome! I think it would be cool to have a giant like a flemmie =:3
Oh my goodness! Sage is beautiful! Those scrumptious ears! I can’t wait to read about your adventures together. And just look at Walker’s face: utterly fascinated with her.
Vienna: I suspect that Zou is part flea.
Hey Q – “part kangaroo” would have been a nicer comparison !!
Sage is lovely indeed and Walker just looks lovely too, not in alert “yummyyummy” zone at all
but LFB, the name is a bit confusing – poor dog – “Walkies Walker” !!?
Nope. Fleas’ ability to jump makes roos (but not Zous) look like amateurs.
Hmmmmmm, Spider-bun then, he boings everywhere…. !
Hey Guys!
Sorry I have been MIA, a lot going on during our first couple of weeks here
So Update time!!!!
Sage is doing great!!!
She was pretty much completely litter trained in about 3 days!! I was amazed! Other then a few poos here and there everything is in her pans . She has adjusted well to her new home, we have seen her binky and run laps like a freak! She comes to the gate and shakes it when she wants attention, and when you walk into the room she comes over for pets.
Walker is still getting used to the idea of another furry baby sharing the house and I felt bad that Sage didn’t have much room to stretch her legs so we came up with a fix. The first pictures you saw of her set up a couple of weeks ago…her cage was in my office which is a back room in the house, not much interaction and has a lot of wires so we switched it up.
We re-arranged my daughters room and moved Sage in there. The few wires in there were are either behind furniture that she can’t get behind or tacked up out of reach. Sage’s whole set up was moved in there and during the day I open the ex-pen so she has run of the whole room, at night I put her back in her cage. She also gets run of the whole house for 1/2 hour increments through out the day when Walker is outside. Again I was amazed the first time i took this chance when I saw her running laps around the living room and then popping back into her room to use the litter pan then back to racing around the house exploring.
So anyway this new set up is working great. During the day when Sage gets run of the bedroom we have a baby gate up between the room and the living room so Sage and Walker can hear and see each other and I work with Walker on being calm and relaxed. I have attached pictures below so you can see what I am talking about.
I hope you all are doing well and enjoying your own babies as much as we are finding joy in our new baby!!!
Sage relaxing under the kitchen table after some heavy duty exploring
Sages new set up in my daughters room
Sage and Walker on their respective sides of the fence. (if you look you will see Sage laying on one side while Walker was on the other side chewing on one of his bones)
Just wanted to pop in and say Sage is gorgeous! Such a little beauty – I too would love to have a flemmie one day – a bit different from my 2kg lop!! Her set up looks perfect too – the picture of her and your dog chilling out is so sweet.
It never ceases to amaze me that although their ‘prey instincts’ are so strong, they lay down quite happily next to dogs and cats…!!
Mine did it as soon as she got home ! (although at that stage my dog still had her lunch bib on and knife and fork in her paws, so it was never unsupervised then….)
@ Theo: Hello to you and your bun is adorable!!
@ Vienna: I know!!! Since the the first day we brought her home she has been totally interested in Walker, his barking doesn’t alert her at all….whenever he goes over to the gate to see what she is up to she will come running over and stick her nose through to say hello!!
Walker is calm when she is calm but when she starts binkying and running laps he gets excited so they have not met actual face to face yet…right now it is just through the gate interaction.
About another week or so I will start with some on the leash training with my daughter or husband assisting.
Hey! I just wanted to say that Sage is so beautiful! It would be awesome to have a giant!
My rabbit is a black and white Dutch and I love her very much
LFB – in this day and age it is not acceptable to train your daughter on a leash… lol
OMG!! I guess I should re-phrase that huh Vienna!! LOL too funny!!
Sage is simply adorabun! I just love Flemmies, it’s great to hear that things are working out so well.
Update:
We brought Sage home on 7/17/16 (between 7-8weeks old)
I took her to the Vet the following day just to get her a clean bill of health and they weighed her in at 2.11 lbs
I weighed her today 8/2/16….2 weeks later and she is 5.4 lbs!!!!
This little girl won’t be little for long at this rate
Yowzers! Sage is actually a beanstalk.

OMG!! I guess I should re-phrase that huh Vienna!! LOL too funny!!
Oh! The difference a comma can make !!
How heavy were Sage’s parents ? That will give you an idea !
Hey there
@Vienna: Sage’s Momma is 19 lbs and her Daddy is 15 lbs
I also wanted to share something that I decided to do…
I want Sage to grow into a healthy, happy and fulfilled bun. I want to be able to give her greens but I was stressing a bit about price, storage, freshness and possible chemicals. Produce is expensive around here and I am picky so I started thinking about growing our own….
I was going to do an outdoor garden but we live in a farming community and the crops get sprayed and I was worried about blow-over and the chemicals leeching into our soil so after more research I came across this and got very excited…..
the Miracle Gro AeroGarden
I have ordered a mix of Bunny Approved Salad Greens and Herbs and will be growing Sages Salad completely chemical free in our home that I way I know it is all safe.
We are growing Kale, Romaine, Arugula, Mint, Sage, Chamomile, Cilantro, Dill, Basil and Parsley. (of course we measly humans will be able to partake of this bounty as well )
How big is that? Because it’s a massive and deliciously awesome mix you picked.
lol…the big one is 9 pods…the smaller one I have is 3 pods….I can grow a total of 12 different things but I chose to double up a few.
It’s brill!
