Hi everyone! I picked up a new member of our family yesterday – Gus, a 9 week old Flemish Giant. So far he seems to be settling in nicely and is making himself quite at home in his litter box.
While my husband and I are first-time rabbit owners, I grew up with a variety of pets over the years. We settled on a Flemish because we wanted a large bun with a calm temperament since we have cats and a toddler (who is, of course, always supervised around animals). He’s set up in a dog crate that’s intended for Great Danes. Once he’s neutered and is more consistent with his toilet habits and is old news to the cats, he’ll have free run of the house while I’m home and only be in his crate at night or if we’re gone. (I woke up this morning to his crate being an absolute disaster – poop and pee everywhere! – but since moving his pellet dish into the litter box, we’re going on 7 hours with no poop or pee outside his box. Fingers crossed!) Right now I’m trying to balance giving him space to get settled with giving him some love and pets. He’s also getting used to different household noises like the vacuum – doesn’t phase him one bit! It probably helps that he lived on a farm with all sorts of tractor sounds.
I also wanted to thank this community. I’ve been lurking for a while in preparation for bringing Gus home, and the information on this site has been so helpful. I’ll post some pics below!
