Hi, I’m a newb. Just introducing myself to the forum.
My family and I went to the County Fair a couple weeks ago and always love to look at the animals, my kids love the bunnies so we went in to check them out. That’s when I saw him…he was the cutest and biggest Holland Lop in the whole barn. He had a huge head and big floppy ears and really unique coloring. And he was dying for attention! He paced back and forth and my daughter and I pet his head through the bars. His owner walked over and mentioned he was for sale, my daughter was smitten. I’ll admit I was pretty convinced he was the coolest rabbit ever, but I was not planning to bring a rabbit home from the fair that day. His owner talked about how friendly and cuddly he was, that he just adored attention and was such a big sweetheart. We left and went home, but he made such an impression on me that I got the girl’s contact info…just in case. My daughter was so angry with me, she stayed mad for 2 days after the fair! Fast forward about a week and my kids were all still talking about him and I honestly was getting slightly obsessed myself. I had looked up the girl’s website to read more about him. I emailed her and asked some questions. I wanted to know about him being intact, whether he sprayed or was aggressive at all, his housing situation, etc. About a week later I made arrangements to drive out to her house and visit him outside of the cage, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. Needless to say, he came home with me that day and has been spoiled rotten ever since (about 2 weeks now).
He doesn’t have a name yet, he’s such a sweet and friendly little dude, I can’t find the right name yet. He’s a little over a year old, and I just got him neutered last week on Thursday. He’s very mellow and follows me around like a puppy, lets us pet him, and will lay down and flop while we do. He is so calm and docile, I think he’s a rare gem of a personality. I’ve been going through the site for a couple months, and I’ve found the forum to be a wealth of info as well as the HRS website. Based on my reading on here, I’ve built him a large custom C&C cube cage with a large level and a wooden base, covered with linoleum. I’ve got him pretty well litter trained (we still have “pills” on both floors of the cage but he’s got the pee down) and we let him out a few times a day for at least an hour each time. He’s really been a wonderful addition to our family, he’s settled right in and has become quite attached to me. I know a lot of that will settle down in a few weeks after his neuter, but he circles me, licks me, and gets *ahem* aroused sometimes. No humping at least. He is a big boy, about 4.25 lbs, and I believe that the girl I got him from didn’t want him because he was too heavy to show. At least, that’s the impression I got. But I don’t care about his pedigree or any of that, he’s a part of my family and we don’t want to breed him or anything, so I got him neutered right away. He has shown no aggression or fear towards any of us, he’s really more like a little dog than a bunny (or what I thought bunnies were like) and I feel like it was fate that we met him at the fair. It’s not that he had it horrible or anything, but he lived outdoors in a wire floor hutch and I feel like we’ve given him the opportunity to flourish inside with a huge condo and free range time. My house was already pretty well “bunny proofed” because of my kids and cats, but a few extra precautions were taken and I watch him closely while he’s out. We just love him so much already and I really hope he’s happy here. He binkies and dances and flops quite often, so I think he is pretty pleased with his new home.
Here’s a picture, I was told he was a black Holland Lop with some otter in his lines (not sure what that means exactly) but he’s got this beautiful red-brown mask and parts of his ears and his back is tinged reddish. Does anyone know more abut his strange coloring?
