So I’m a new bunny owner, went and picked out a Lionhead bunny, she’s super sweet, and has been pretty sociable so far. I practiced “ignoring” her last night, and she was pretty funny, she’d run around and run up to me and nudge me with her nose and then run around some more. I think I’ve even seen her binky. I’m surprised at how well she’s doing, actually, I thought she’d need more of an adjustment to being around people or whatever. Haven’t figured out a name yet!
What an adorable little girl! Just a little friendly warning though – with bunnies this young, it’s usually very difficult to sex them. So be prepared for her to turn into a he! lol It happens ALL the time. Vets are usually the best at sexing them but sometimes they get it wrong too. She looks like a sweetheart though! ![]()
She is very cute! Tiny ears! How old is she though? She seems so young to be away from the mother yet.
She’s 8-10 weeks according to the store. She could very well be a He, lol, it’s not a big deal, I just don’t want to say he/she every time I refer to her ![]()
Aw, adorable! You should name her/him Cinnabunny! Hehe.. I’m kind of a sucker for bunny-centric names. ![]()
I’m leaning towards Flower, partly because her little face looks like a pansy (lol!) and partly because when I sing her the song from Tangled and she comes out of her cage
My daughters want Bounce and Thumper (oy!) and my husband says “Smushface”. So we’re still working it out LOL.
Haha, I have so many names for my bunnies! I usually just call them both “Poopy”…. it fits! ![]()
Speaking of poopy, should I put her litterbox inside or outside her cage?
I would do 2-3 litter boxes if you can. 1 inside the cage, the other 1-2 outside. This would really encourage her to use the litter boxes and eventually you can have it down to 1. I am still having to do this with my two boys who are in their xpen. They have 3 litter boxes and one of them is the plastic bottom to their old cage. I noticed that they would have accidents often when I only gave them one option to go to the bathroom in. It was actually a suggestion that I got on this forum, so I know it’s tried and true. ![]()
I used a cardboard box in the interim, filled it with the litter stuff, then made another box and stuffed it with hay, so she sits on the box with the litter but still eats the hay. Then there’s fleece on the floor and her little grass hut thing.
Do rabbits need second floors? I was thinking maybe I could put a tight mesh over the top of the cage and make a ramp up if so?
I’ll have to get a couple litter boxes tomorrow. Is the water too high? Oh, and don’t mind the boxes! They’re going out to the garage tomorrow ![]()
Aw what a good home! I don’t think she would need a second floor, but some of the cardboard box mazes that BinkyBunny sells are great (http://store.binkybunny.com/mini-haven-binkybunnycom-p68.aspx). You can do two stories, which might be a little to tall for her right now, or you can just do the one story. Bunnies are so curious and love exploring so mixing up the cage sometimes, adding new pieces of cardboard, rotating toys, etc, is key. Have you looked at the “Habitat and Toys” section of the forum? There are great toys and such on there!
The water may be too high, you could put it down a little bit. You could also give her a bowl of water outside of her cage but still in the xpen. I have always used water bottles but just recently found that one of my buns really prefers to drink out of the bowl! I say out in the xpen because I think there would be less of a chance to knock it over.
It looks really good though! She will be so happy in that set up, especially with a few more toys. You could even take some empty boxes and get all of the tape off and make a tunnel with it!
Great set up! Now I see her in her habitat she doesn’t seem as tiny.
I agree with what’s been suggested. Pop a bowl of water in the pen area and see if she drinks from it also. Add a seconf litter box to the pen area to encourage good litter habits.
You could always put something on top of the cage and she could jump up on there. It’s ideal where it’s positioned in the corner because as she/he gets older they might use the cage
to jump over the pen if it were elsewhere. They’re little escape artists sometimes!
Great water dish and second litterbox set!
So Bun escaped last night :0. We don’t know if she squeezed through the bars or jumped over? But she was sleeping on a pillow that was on floor in the living room when my husband go up this morning. Little rascal.
adorable! the first pics you posted of her, she just looked soooo tiny! once i saw her in her home, though, i realized she is bigger. she’s still small enough that i’m betting she squeezed through the bars to go exploring. my rue is a houdini bun. i have no idea how she gets out, so i finally just gave up and accepted that she is free ranging. lol i have to lock her in another room when nut puppet (see, your kids could come up with worse names!) comes out of his cage.
What an adorable little bun, and great home for her! I think jerseygril’s idea is great, to put a solid surface on top of the cage to create some vertical dimension to the pen area if you’re considering a second level. You could place a box beside the cage just to make it easier to get up there too, and bunnies usually love cardboard boxes in any case. Congrats on your cute new bun
.
Aww!! she looks to me like a ‘Buttercup’ or maybe ‘Blossom’ ‘Maise’ or ‘Daisey’
she is beutiful! and she must be doing great to be binkying and chasing you around so much its great! but again at that age she or he could be any sex, so in a few more weeks take her to the vet for a check on sex
