My name is Naaria. I don’t currently have any bunnies yet but I’m trying to change that; which is why I’ve joined this site! I had bunnies when I was little but it was my parents who usually took care of them so I’m no pro, but I do know the basics of bunny care.

Uhm, I don’t know if it’s okay to post this here, but one of the problems I’m facing getting a bunny is that we have mice in our house! I was thinking of having the condo [ which I’ll build once I’m 100% decided ] higher up, but after reading some posts here it doesn’t seem like it would work very well.. Is there a way to keep them from getting close to the bunny? I’ve read that peppermint will help, but I sorta feel like I’d have to create a barricade of peppermint cotton balls just to feel like the bun is safe! Which makes me think it might be a bad idea to get a bunny while I still live at home but I’d really like to make the commitment! Any help and suggestions would be great

Hi and welcome! I’ve had 2 mice in my room that I knew of before when I had guinea pigs in here I found one dead in their condo…YUCK. And then about a year ago one made a nest under my bed. I live on a hill so there are plenty of field mice in all the grassy hills here. I am unsure of what diseases they can carry, I know rabies obviously and then I think there is something in their feces, or is that just raccoons?? I’ve never heard of peppermint working. Interesting. Is your mouse problem really bad? Your parents should look into getting an exterminator, they aren’t healthy to live with. I wish you the best of luck with this, but unfortunately your future rabbit’s pellets and hay will attract the mice just like they did for me. Hopefully someone here will have some better tips for you because I am stumped!

Sorry Naaria, I haven’t had to deal with mice. However, mice DO carry a disease in their feces. It’s called Hantavirus and it’s deadly. We had and an outbreak of it in Utah and the Southwest about 10 years ago and since then we’ve all been more cautious with mice. It’s rare that mice would bite a rabbit (they prefer to run away), but diseases can be transmitted through saliva (eating the same food) and droppings. I agree that you should make efforts, if you haven’t already, to keep them out of the house.

I agree about trying to get them out of the house before contemplating bringing a rabbit home.
