Hi everyone!
I’ve been using this site as a resource for bunny questions for a while now, so I’m not sure why I never made an account before! I become a rabbit mom in September 2015 to a bun named Louise. I’ve learned a lot in the past few months, but there’s still so much more to know!
Louise is 2 year old mini lop, she’s white with big red eyes. She is a BIG bunny, probably about 5-6 pounds. She was rescued by a house rabbit society after living on the streets of Cleveland for the first year of her life. She’s SO smart, and curious, and energetic. She’s not much of a “people rabbit” and is generally pretty suspicious of people. She’s very vocal and grunts and growls at people most of the time if they try to approach her. However, I’ve seen her make so much progress in the last few months! When I first got her, she was almost completely untouchable and incredibly food aggressive. I don’t think I was actually able to pet her for 2-3 months. But recently, she’s learned that petting can be nice! She now enjoys the occasional nose pet, and will tooth-pur at me. She’s still a little food aggressive and will lunge/bite if someone gets too close to her food, but she’s getting better! She’s my entire world, and she’s so rewarding to work with. It makes everything worth it when she loafs and lets me stroke her nose and scratch her ears. (Side note: I’m pretty sure I’ve read every thread on this site about how to work with “difficult” buns haha). Right now, I’m working on clicker training her to do some tricks, She seems to really enjoy learning tricks and having “tasks”. Also, I think it’s a way for us to bond that doesn’t involve me touching her, which is preferable for her.
I’ve also recently discovered that she LOVES to be outside. I take her in the backyard once a day, and she does all her big binkies and hops outside.
I’m a college student, and she’s registered as an emotional assistance animal. So she’s allowed to go places with me, and has enjoyed occasionally coming to class with me! She has no interest in meeting people or in being touched, but loves to hop around and chin people’s shoes. When people ignore her, she has a good time exploring and is very content to flop down wherever. Her favorite foods are bananas and shredded wheat.
I’m so happy to be joining this community, and I hope it will help me be the best bunny-mom I can be. I’m hoping to learn more about working with aggressive rabbits, rabbit “language”, and rabbit bonding. I can’t wait to learn from other people’s experiences and talk to other bunny moms.
Nose bonks for you all,
Kennedy + Louise
