hey everyone!!! I am planning on adopting my  bunny sometime between mid febuary to mid april!! I cant wait to adopt and find the perfect one for me, I had a  new zeland buck when I was little and now Id like a holand lop doe Hopefully I can find a kit around 5 weeks!hope to hear from you guys soon. If anyone wants to give me any tips on adoption, bringing home bunny, baby bunny tips or anything to know before getting her please help out thanks!!

It’s great you want to adopt from a shelter, there are a lot of benefits to that option.

I don’t know how likely it is that you will find a baby at a shelter though. You know, getting an adult bun is a lot easier than a baby, so that might be something to consider. If you do get a baby, it will be 8 weeks old because babies can’t leave their mumma before that

Shelters rarely adopt out babies, most shelters (around here anyway) will wait until the animal is old enough to be spayed or neutered, and usually they only adopt out young rabbits to experienced rabbit owners. Keep in mind that a rabbit is full grown by 6 months–if you’re just wanting a baby. remember it’s just not going to last. Furthermore, a rabbit, especially a young rabbit, is a real commitment, because many house rabbits will live to ten years! What if you go to college?

Most breeders, that I know, won’t let a kit leave that early, either. You might do some more reading before you take the plunge, I recomend rabbit.org

Well good news! A friend of a friend palpated her bunny today and she thinks she’s pregnant! I was planning on adopting from a guy who had a few 5 week old kits but decided not too because its too early to take the kit from its mother. My friends, friend rescued 2 lops from a woman when they were young and she told her they were both does….come to find out one wasnt! So now shes having an accidental litter but plans on spaying her doe afterwards. So i will be adopting my lop a week before easter. I dont premote breeding really but I guess if rabbits didnt…nobody would have one! And Im actually in my junior year of college right now and have plenty of time for all my pets my fianc’e and I cant wait to bring her home!! I am very aware they dont stay tiny forever as my new zeland buck grew to be rather large and eventually died at age 6 of cancer In september I plan on adopting an adult from my local shelter and doing open showing with it, I think itll be nice to adopt and have a show bunny. As for this baby she wont be in shows. Just a pet to help me get back into the swing of bunnys! thanks for the help guys!

Rabbit showing is really more for rabbit breeders. Rabbits are judged strictly on how well they conform to breed standards. This is helpful for breeders trying to get the best looking stock. It helps them develop a breeding program and ensure they’re producing animals to breed standard. They also expose rabbits to illness and can be incredibly stressful experiences.

Show rabbits in “official shows” are not allowed to be spayed or neutered. For female rabbits spaying is especially important because they have a 50-80% chance of developing uterine cancer by the age of 4. We’ve had members who had their rabbits spayed at 6 months that already were developing cancer.

The showing idea isnt a forsure thing, my friend does it with hers and invited me to begin open showing in the fall. Idk if I will because ive never given it any thought untill now. My new bunny is strictly a pet she will not be in shows. I have been talking with her this evening about it and I dont know if i would even ever win because i do not breed or anything. And I am a wee bit worried about germs from one rabbit to another.

Honestly the more she talks about her rabbit showing the more i dont want to do it. I think maybe ill just stick with only having a pet now and not showing. Her rabbit got sick once at a show, i dont want that happening to mine

I don’t think your friend is accidentally breeding rabbits for show. I think perhaps you’ve been mislead.

The friend im adopting from is not the same friend who shows. My friend who recomended me to her shows and the other does not she just had pets.

Ohh, I get it now.

In that case, it was really strange that your show-friend didn’t tell you that you can’t show shelter rabbits in the first place. In fact, I think you need a pedigree (which shows the rabbits’ lineage 3 generations back.) no matter where you get the rabbit to qualify for showing.

If that’s not for you (and apparently it isn’t) I’ve heard that bigger cities have pet beauty contests. You might enjoy that if the germ thing doesn’t bother you too bad.
