I was woken up by a bit of foot stomping about an hour ago (it’s 3:30 am here), got up to check and found Hannah lying behind the sofa flat on her stomach, ears cold. I offered her some dried beetroot, and she loves it, but she’s not interested, that’s how I knew straight away she wasn’t well. She won’t touch pellets either and she eats like a pig normally. I gave her some Infacol and Meloxidyl and rubbed her tummy a little hoping it’s just gas. She was fine last night, I gave Bud and her some dried herbs just before I went to bed and she ate them. We’re taking her to the vets as soon as they open. Send some vibes our way, I am so worried about my girl.
Oh no, I hope she feels better soon! ((((hannah))))
(((HANNAH)))) hope it’s just a tummy upset
{{{{{Hannah}}}}}
Thank you. I gave Hannah some more Infacol at 4 and 5 and she seems a bit better. She’s grooming herself now. Her tummy started making noises now as well. She still won’t eat or drink though
Just two and a half hours till the vet opens.
Counting down the minutes for you MissD….. (((Hannah)))
(((((VIbes)))) for Hannah. Hope this clears up easily. ![]()
Oh no
~Hannah~
I’m thinking of you
Is she doing any better today?
Thank you all, we appreciate all your kind words.
We saw the vet, unfortunately it wasn’t our regular vet as she’s on holiday. He examined Hannah and said it was most probably gas. He injected some painkiller and prescribed Zantac and Domperidone. Told us to come back at 6:30 if she doesn’t improve. Hannah finally drank some water and had a few bits of coriander and a few pellets, she nibbled on some hay as well. She doesn’t look as uncomfortable as earlier but she hasn’t pooped yet. And she won’t have the meds. We tried giving it to her with a syringe like we have before with Buddy but she won’t swallow it, she keeps it in her mouth till it all leaks out. Have you got any ideas how to make her take her meds? We never had that problem with Buddy.
I’ve heard people say that mixing it with mashed banana or applesauce works. Mine just lick meds right from the syringe as long as they think its all their idea. Is liquid Zantac still a strong mint flavor? If so, I’m not sure banana would be the fruit of choice (minty banana?).
Gosh MissD – I doubt your gonna like my suggestion, but when you have to…….
Not that I’ve had to do this with Henry, but I would if I had too – Hannah needs to be held firmly (including her head and mouth) and the syringe literally placed into her mouth right to the back near her throat and give a little but not all, you don’t want her to choke. Being that far back her instinct will be to swallow. Reassure her with kind words and pats and sadly, do it again and again till it’s all gone. After she has taken it all – give her a favourite treat, kisses along with what a good girl she’s been. I know this sounds terrible – but I had to do it with my tiny toy poodle (he was the same size as Henry and just as fragile), and I was almost sick over it – but he got his medicine and that was all that mattered.
Hopefully others will have a better way for Hannah to take her medicine, but that’s what I had to do with my boy.
Again, I’m so sorry MissD and I will have Hannah in my thoughts till she is all good again.
Thank you AndHenry, I will try your method, I need to get the meds in. Luckily Hannah is not as feisty as Buddy so it’s easier to hold her still. Funnily I had no trouble giving her Infacol. She doesn’t want to eat anything again and still hasn’t pooped
JackRabbit – yeah, Zantac’s still the same, I’ll have to think of something else to mix it with. Maybe some apple juice, mint goes with apple I think. I don’t know.
Thank you both.
I wondered why the vet prescribed zantac so I looked it up. Apparently Zantac can be used as a gut motility drug in rabbits. Wow. Had no idea!
MissD – I wonder if peach or strawberry would work. Lifesaver or some candy company is making fruit flavored mints now so apparently minty fruit isn’t so bad!
Stickers has tried to do that hold it til it leaks thing. What I had to is VERY slowly syringe it in behind the gap in her teeth (back of their mouth there is a gap of their teeth a small syringe can fit in) . You have to put just a tiny bit in, or they spit it out. Then I held her head at a slight upward angle and rubbed her throat until she swallowed. Then syringed in more. Kept doing it until she took it all and she figured out spitting it out was a bad idea.
More (((((VIBES))))) for Hannah.
I managed to squeeze some more meds into her but even when I put the syringe deeper into her mouth, she still wouldn’t swallow all of it. She did take more though so it’s progress. She also ate some pellets and some hay so I’m a bit happier. Still no poop. Thank you all for your suggestions and vibes. I sure needed them ![]()
((((((Bunny Poop Vibes)))))
I hope she’s doing better now.
((((Vibes))))
((((Get better Hannah))))
Yay for eating, (((((vibes))))) for poos.
{{{Hannah}}}
I place syringe in side of mouth. Then push back on that corner of mouth with side of syringe tip and they’ll often open and do a chewing motion.
Hope that makes sense.
Jersey, that’s exactly what my buns do when the vet sticks the thingy in their mouths to check their back teeth!
Continued vibes for Hannah. {{{{Hannah poops}}}}
Thank you, all your suggestions are very helpful. I managed to get more meds into her this morning but now she absolutely hates me
She finally pooped though! It’s a bit smaller and darker than normal but at least it’s there. She ate her pellets this morning and hay, and had most of her salad. Also, she went back to chewing the back of my sofa so she must be better
Thank you all again.
More healing vibes – I don’t think she hates you – she just doesn’t feel good.
Smaller and darker is better than none! Glad to hear she’s eating and pooping. {{{{Continued eating and pooping vibes}}}}
That’s AWESOME MissD!!!
And this is the ONE time your happy that she is chewing on the sofa! Lol……
(((((Vibes))))) for better poo and better eating.
Yay for improvement! ![]()
Thank you all. Hannah’s fine now
You all rock!!
