› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Head Tilt *UPDATE*
So along with Funny Foot (maybe renamed Michael Jackson if we get him lol) we also took a look at Pokey (http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/27758930), Josh (my boyfriend) instantly fell in love with him and I told him a bunny with head tilt will be a lot to deal with….if you watch the video they tell you that it’s permanent. What is a rabbit with head tilt like? they say they want him to go to an experienced home…am I experienced enough? Josh wants to give him a chance and wants to “give him all the love he can give him” (his words), I am going to to take a look at him when we go see Funny foot on Tuesday. Is it harder to bond a bunny with head tilt? I want to give him a chance because I feel like it would be VERY difficult for this bunny to find a home. I ‘m wondering if Caleb will help support him and give him encouragement or if he’ll shun him
Any advice?
I think it would be good for Pokey to have a friend. I do think you are experienced enough and it sounds like they would help you out as well which is great.
It sounds like he gets around well and has been treated. I once had a friend who had a rabbit with permanent head tilt – not sure what exactly it was from but he managed very well and bonded with a headstrong female rabbit.
It’s impossible to know how Caleb would react which is why you would want to have him along for the dates.
I knew the last part was up to Caleb,
it makes me feel really good that you say I’m experienced enough to have Pokey. I really did like him when I first saw him and we clicked on him but I didn’t end up watching his video until later.
he’s such a handsome bunny and he seems so sweet
I hope Caleb likes him!
He’s also not neutered because of his wry-neck and the vet won’t do the surgery, I don’t know if them meeting with him not being neutered is a good idea.
Hmmm….that’s certainly something to consider. Might be something to ask the rescue about before not considering it. Maybe due to age (3 years old) and disability it might possibly still work.
They have lots of cute rabbits to chose from.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up if that’s the case. =( You could still try to introduce them but I think there’s a good chance it won’t work.
Yes they do have a lot to choose from, maybe he won’t need to be neutered….? not sure
My understanding is that a bond can never really work properly unless both buns are bonded.
Even if they initially get along, with fluctuating hormones there’s no way of knowing if the bun will suddenly change their mind one day. :/
Hopefully they may reconsider the neuter or you’ll fall in love with another bun.
Caleb might not even like him anyway! ![]()
maybe…I’m actually going to talk to them about it Tuesday. Because he needs a special vet I’m going to recommend the vet that I was recommended by the first rescue I was going to go through only because they are better than my current vet from what I hear. So maybe they will do the neuter on the poor bunny. So maybe I’ll get him anyway…..Just not quite sure, but like I said I’m going to get to see all the bunnies Tuesday
Didn’t know it until today but it’s a 2 hour and 16 minutes drive
didn’t know that but it’ll be worth it when we get our bunny. Also the extra NIC cubes came today so all we need is plywood, zip ties, and a day of nothing to do
plus carpet (to make it more grippy)
I think you two will do great with whatever bunny you end up with. It’s hard but I would try not to get too focused on a single bunny and keep an open mind. You might find the perfect bunny is one you never expected.
That’s what happened to me with Dexter and Penny. They were the “boring bunnies” on the website. But something about them just clicked with us when we met them.
I’m so excited for you! It sounds like this rescue might be a little more open minded about different bond pairings.
That’s a good point, MD. When I saw a rabbit on the site, I was really into him, then met him in person and he was way too spazzy for me.
sometimes I forget that I should be more open minded and just look at all the bunnies and see which one fits for me and Caleb might like the best ![]()
So they re-evaluated Pokey and they decided he could be neutered (which is happening today)
super excited I think there was some mis-communication with the rescue though. They thought I was taking the bunny home tomorrow when I go down to visit. I let them know that first I wanted Caleb to meet the bunnies we pick out and see if he likes one of them or not and we would do that in a month after we pick them out because that way hormones wouldn’t interfere with his picking them out. I didn’t want to bring one home tomorrow also because the condo isn’t built yet
the extra NIC cubes are here we just have to get going building the thing…..probably do it on a friday.
what should i know about head tilt?
My rabbit had head tilt. His head was all the way upside down. When I brought him home, his head was at the same degree as your bunny which was a huge improvement. I was really overprotective at first, but as soon as I put him back in his cage area, he was all over the place. He didn’t didn’t tumble, but he was a bit awkward until he got he hang of his old environment again. Except for the angle of his head, he was the same bunny…active, curious, and wanting love.
No one was sure whether he would get better. We had heard a lot about bunny massage. I had a friend and massage therapist all ready to work on my bunny. I didn’t think it would cure him, but thought it would make him feel better.
He isn’t my bunny yet….it depends if my current bunny likes him and if he does then we will adopt him….poor bunny
My Smudge had head tilt. In fact, her head is still a little tilted almost a year later… Massage helped her, as did meclizine tablets, the tablets helped her with her balance and vertigo. With those, she is back to her sassy self, if a bit more inquisitive looking.
When she was more tilted, she definitely couldn’t move around as much, and needed to have stuff against the walls for her to lean into. How tilted is Pokey? Is he mobile at all? If so, there probably isn’t much to worry about if he can eat and drink and find the potty. Just keep an eye on him if you do get him ![]()
http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/27758930 this is him
he seems mobile they say he still binkies
