Hazel’s Spay Day Today

 Well, I met with the vet at 9am and they assured me Hazel was in good hands… She supposedly started surgery between 11am-noon, so I should be hearing very soon how things went. I am nervous, of course, but felt much more confident after meeting and speaking to the vet. She spent a lot of quality time with Hazel and was going to really take things slow and quiet heading into the surgery, as she judged Hazel to be a little nervous. I couldn’t be happier with the hospital I chose and I know without a doubt it’s out of my hands now!

One thing that was super cool was the vet and the tech complimented my knowledge of bunny care. They said that I was a very well informed owner and off to a really good start. I told them that I had learned a ton from the Binky Bunny and all the recommended readings here. They both thought that Hazel is adorable and I’m just really excited to get her back home and on the mend. I chose laser surgery and also for her to have fluids? I wish I could remember what was “different” about the fluids, but there was a slight upcharge of $26 for the fluids and $10 more for the laser surgery, but her comfort means a whole lot more to me than $36!! Hopefully having the laser will help it be cleared up before we go on vacation next week to my friend Dayna’s ranch! She gets to have her own private room in the lodge and tons of one-on-one time with me. 

OMG, can’t the vet just CALL and tell me it’s all good already??? I’m not nervous but I am, ya know?

I waited about two minutes after posting to call the vet myself. She assured me that Hazel was through surgery great and she was watching her just start to wake up and move around and was getting ready to call me and tell me I can pick her up at 4:30pm.

I’m glad to hear Hazel made it through the spay okay.

My vets never gave me a choice of laser surgery or not.

Be prepared for Hazel to be tired and she will probably just want to be left alone. Make sure to keep an eye on her eating and poops over the next few days and check her incision daily.

She is snoozing in her “starter” condo in the upstairs loft bathroom (the quietest room in the house). I guess the laser wasn’t totally what they used in the surgery, but it is supposed to help it heal faster. She is glued shut. They warned me to check the incision and keep an eye on her and give her next dosage of pain meds at 8pm. She seems content, but yes, very groggy. They said she did eat a little before she left the clinic, so things are going good so far.

A woman in the waiting room referred to me as “eccentric” when she heard I had a bunny in to get spayed (and living in my house). I told her proudly, “Lady, you don’t know what you’re missing!” It was pricey, but worth it for my little friend. You can’t put a price on love.

No doubt! I informed everyone in the waiting room that she had an 85% chance at getting uterine cancer if I didn’t spay her. When I went back into the room to get her from the vet tech and get my discharge instructions, she told me “I heard you say that and was so happy! You really did your homework!”  Thanks Binky Bunny friends!

Update on Hazel today: Got her pain meds this morning (she’s really good about getting the medicine) and is wanting to be more active. Still in her starter cage in the bathroom but coming out for a little exercise time today as recommended by the vet to keep her digestive tract working. She is pooping and peeing and eating and drinking. Poop was a little soft this morning but should firm up now that she isn’t being tempted to eat her favorite fruits and lettuce. I have learned that blueberries and bananas are her very favorites – even when she feels like garbage, she can still fit a few of them in her belly, haha. Still seems a little tired, but cheerful. Gave me a kiss when I gave her some fresh hay just now. Figuring everything will firm up as the day progresses. I looked at her incision this morning and it looks good – clean and cool.
