Hay shipment fiasco - Should it be OK?

  First, I order all of my hay from places in CA.
  
  I ordered some hay from KMS and it was shipped via UPS on 8/20. UPS put it on a rail car and it arrived in Illinois 8/26 PM. Supposedly because of bad weather, the hay was loaded on a truck and sat there until 8/28 PM. From there, in went to MD and then arrived in VA 8/29 AM. According to UPS, the package will sit on that closed up truck until 9/2 and then be delivered by the end of the day 9/2. So, in all, the hay will have been in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box, inside closed up trains/trucks for almost 2 weeks, and the last 4 days sitting on the truck will be during outside temps in the 90’s with high humidity. I tried to get them to let me drive to the UPS location and pick the hay up on 8/29 but they said even if I went there they wouldn’t let me have it. (Normally when I order hay it’ll ship on a Friday and be delivered the following Wednesday or Thursday).

  Most hay is stored in plastic bags for much longer than this so I don’t think it’s a problem.

  What about being in plastic bags and completely closed up in the heat?

  Gosh, that does sound yucky – but when I buy my hay from the pet shop I have no idea of the conditions it was transported and left in before I grab it from the shelf, and just like food items I buy for my family, I’d rather not know sometimes???
  I think just check out the hay when it arrives and see if it’s all ok? If it is – lucky! and great. But if it’s not up to the standard you paid for and expect, put it back onto the courier company to reimburse you. I’m not sure what else you can do – especially till you’ve seen the product and if it survived those conditions? And the issue that these courier companies don’t take into consideration – what if you ‘needed’ it when it was due to be delivered? Too bad/tough luck??? Seriously, not good enough! And do you get compensated for that? Mmmmm……..

  KMS thinks it’ll be ok. I’m so aggravated that the hay is being held hostage for like 5 days and they wouldn’t let me pick it up because someone would have to open the truck.

  JR I think it should be fine. I get my hay from there too. I actually ordered from them two weeks ago and haven’t gotten my shipment yet because of their supplier. Any way, if you really want to return it because it’s bad they’ll take it and replace. I would just check the hay when you see it.
