Hay problem

I set up a hay rack next to the litterbox, and put fresh hay in it 2 or 3 times a day. He usually digs all the hay out, looking for the best pieces and the rest just stays in the litterbox (perhaps also to make it a bit comfortable for himself?).

But no matter how much hay we give him, he’s always out looking for more. He will eat some that fell on the floor, and lately he’s very busy trying to get to the hay bag. I wouldn’t mind him eating from it, but he always leaves a big pile of poop in it and even pees in it.

It’s like he doesn’t like hay if you give it to him… or perhaps he only likes a few pieces and wants to go out and look for more “good pieces”.

I want him to eat enough, because he’s pretty skinny (don’t know if it’s normal, but I can feel all the bones in his body). When we give him pellets/vegetables, he goes crazy like he didn’t eat for months.

I guess I’m a bit worried that he doesn’t have enough to eat (even though he always has plenty of hay…).

It seems like maybe he likes to scavenge for his hay, almost like he wants to earn it haha…maybe you could “hide” hay in the areas he is in the most so that he can find it on his own. My bun loves when I stuff hay in toilet paper rolls, because she has to toss it around and work for it (at least that’s what it seems like to me) so that might be a good option too…

Curious, have you talked to your vet about your bunny’s weight and what the appropriate weight for him is?

I agree with JR.
Some bunnies are picky about their hay. You could try giving him smaller amounts more often and see if that helps.
