Help! My bun has a small piece of hay in his eye. He doesn’t seem bothered by it but I want to get it out and he doesn’t seem to realize it’s there so I don’t think he will try to do it himself. I’ve tried holding open his eyes to get at it, but, like humans, his natural instinct is to shut them. I also tried using a warm washcloth but he isn’t very keen on that. This would be easier to do if he liked being picked up and/or coddled, but he HATES being picked up so I don’t do it because I don’t want him to injure himself when he kicks and squirms. He stays relatively still when I try to get it out, but eventually he gets agitated and runs away. I’m not sure what to do!

Is the hay piece piercing his eye, or is a a small piece that’s laying on the surface?

If it’s relatively small, you can leave it up to your rabbit to get it out. As they blink and use their eyelids, it will get pushed to his eye corner, and from there, rabbits use their paws to get out debris. I’ve seen tiny specs of fur tumbleweeds in Wick’s eye occasionally and try to get them out, but eventually he just gets it himself.

Does his eye seem irritated? It could be partially closed or watery, or very red.

It was just a small piece laying on his eye. I left him to his own devices overnight and it looks like he got it out. His eye doesn’t seem irritated in any way, so that’s good. Thank you for the reply! I will file away this information for later if it ever happens again

That’s great to hear! I’m glad he got it out.
