Hello, I adopted a new bunny in mid December. He is a 2 year old mini Rex ( white with black ears, around his eyes, spots on his back).
Almost daily or every 2-3 days he is dripping liquid and clear felt like mucous. He eats well plays and acts normal. But nothing I have done has helped the mucous. When he is mucousy and I pick him up he occasionally releases gas. He has normal conisistancy stools as well some of which are very large and many are misshapen.
After multiple trips to the vet and multiple medications he still drops mucous. I am concerned about possible megacolon. The things we have tried so far:
The first stool sample was positive for coccidia. He was treated with Albon, but no change.
Then we tried a course of metronidazole antibiotics. And started him on strictly hay diet, and added oxbow digestive support tablets. These did not help so continued on the hay only diet but added sucralfate to try and adjust the ph of his cecum. Again with no change.
He lost a large amount of weight with the hay only diet although he seems to eat a good amount daily. We then did a set of radiographs which showed very large cecum taking up entire abdomen, and some gas in cecum. We then sent out a gram stain cytology to the lab that has a larger than normal amount of gram negative rods. He is now on a course of baytril and I have added in critical care feedings to maintain his weight. We also added a probiotic and attempted collecting Cecals from my healthy bunny (not very successful but he got a few) I am also mixing a few regular stools from my healthy bun in the critical care. I am on my last day of baytril and last night he had a normal amount of mucous… nothing has changed.
I might add I have done 2 other fecals and he is now negative for the coccida no other parasites seen.
I will attach a few photos. If anyone has other ideas of what may be going on.. or if sounds like megacolon … what should I be feeing/ what mess help?
