Eeeeh so I have to get my wisdom teeth removed on Friday.  I’m not as worried about the actual surgery so much as I am the recovery! And not because of the pain….because of Little-Bit!! I’m just so afraid that I’ll be so out of it that I’ll accidentally step on her or something, especially since she darts so easily under your feet.

Doc prescribed me Lortab. I’ve never been anesthetized or taken narcotics before, so I have NO idea how I will react to either. I’ve heard that different people react differently, but I want to hear it from your guys’ perspectives -what has your experience been with narcotics?

And more importantly, how do you manage to do with your buns while taking them??

As you said everyone reacts differently to drugs. I would think that you will mostly be to sleepy at 1st to stagger around, LOL
I would give the bun an extra water bowl & extra hay & food before you go in case you’re really groggy coming home, then you won’t have to immediately deal with watering etc.
The pain killers will wear off a bit between doses & you’ll be plenty coherent enough to tend to the bun then.
You’re not likely to be staggering around on the recommended dosage anyway. I’m sure you’ll be fine.
You’re probably worrying because of seeing narcotic users on TV & how they screw up right? Keep in mind they take way to much & have built up tolerance levels. You’re really unlikely to turn into a flakey addict in a week or 2, using medication properly.
For your peace of mind, when you leave pen the bun up so you can’t possibly step on him after returning home. By the next day you will know whether you should limit the buns freedom.

          Good Luck

oh yeah… i’ve had my wisdom teeth out. plus 2 other molars so 6 teeth yanked at once. aside from the fact that i’m a great big sucky baby it actually went really well. this was 10 yrs ago or so and the drugs they prescribed at the time were tylenol with codine and demerol (sp?). i went straight for the good stuff – the demerol – for the first 24 hrs after surgery much to my mothers dismay. she was sure that i’d become an addict. but i was determined to feel as little pain as possible and after the first 24 hrs i could tell i didn’t need the strong stuff anymore.

furface is right… you’ll be fine enough between doses to care for little bit

i recommend picking up a laxative (some pain meds can bung you up) and an antiemetic incase of any nausea from the anesthesia to have on hand just to be safe. doesn’t hurt to have those on hand anyways. and of course stock up on your fav broths, yogurts, puddings and apple sauce since you won’t want to be munching anything for a day or two. hopefully your experience is as smooth as mine… good luck!

You can try taking a half and see how  you react.   If you need a whole one for the pain then you can take the other half 30 minutes later.

Do you have anyone else that could help you for a few days? After my thyroid surgery I stumbled around due to the pain meds for about a week so the bunnies stayed in the cage and my sister took care of them (I probably would have went head first into the cage if I tried to do anything anyways). I was on some pretty good stuff though and I do have that nice option of a cage. If you do have to have her in one, it probably won’t be for more than a day or two, if that. In about two weeks I will also be unable to be around my bunnies at all for a week due to radiation therapy, but that’s just a little different.

Wow thanks for the tips guys, good points. I didn’t think about being normal in between dosages. Duh.

I’ve planned my surgery strategically around HER sleep schedule so I won’t even have to enter my room for a good 10-12 hours after I wake up from surgery. So right now I do plan on keeping her out since that is the case. Do you guys think the anesthetics will be gone from my system by then?

Does she still have her condo right next to your bed? Maybe she’d be okay just in her condo, watching over you.
It’s been 15 or so yrs since I had mine done. I had it done under GA so mostly all I remember was an interesting shaped face I had afterwards. Goodluck and have a fast recovery.

                        Good Luck!

I had mine cut out at 8 years ago when I was 16 I don’t remember much during after or a few days after.

But I was apparently coherent enough to feed and let my dogs out at the time.
