I adore my bunnies but they don’t really like being held.  Lately when I open the door to come out and play they don’t even want to play!  they seem to love their cage.

My husband is talking about going to FL for 2 months this winter and I’m not sure if that will work or not because of my pets, but I was wondering about trying to find them an excellent home.  I am not one to get disposable pets either and I’d never re-home to anyone unless I absolutely felt they would get the care I give them, although I’m probably not the best bunny mom.

If so, how did you go about it?

I had a lady offer once, she has bunnies, but it seems she has a lot going on at her house, lots of kids and stuff.  I think she even said she has a wooly.  I have a wooly and a mini-rex.

I’m just thinking, so I hope no one gets upset with me.  I couldn’t take to FL with me and my husband is starting to get upset that I have all the animals.  Cats, fish, chickens and my bunnies.

          Hi Kathy,

First off, rabbits don’t like to be held. They are prey animals and think they are going to be eaten when held So it’s best to always lay on the ground with them, where they are.

Have you looked into airlines that allow rabbits? I know of many rabbits that fly on airlines with their humans if needed.

It’s very common for rabbits to dislike being held. As for not wanting to come out, there could be multiple reasons. They may be nervous, maybe the times you open the cage, it’s their nap time. It’s something you could definitely figure out and work on. When trying to make friends with Ava, I left her door open, sat on the floor with a treat and waited for her to come to me. If you’re worried about their friendliness, that’s something you can work on by taking it slow and spending time with them. Are there perhaps alternatives you can find when it comes to the Florida trip; plan on how to take them with you, find someone to foster them, have a friend or relative come by the house everyday, etc.

If you really are set on rehoming them, then first I’d suggest contacting that lady to see if she was still interested and make sure she has a good situation for the bunnies. I think you should think about it for a while, what’s that one big reason you want to rehome them; is it their behavior, the trip, etc. Their behavior can be worked on, you can bond with them if you haven’t already. I don’t want to sound harsh, but I think you need to pinpoint the reason you want to rehome them. If you really want to keep them, I think you should try to find a way.

I’m not sure yet. I don’t really want to get rid of them b/c they are just so cute and I love them.

If we do go, someone will have to come take care of my chickens and my fish. I’m not sure I can take my cats either, if we go and I don’t like that idea at all. We might try to find someone to stay here when we are gone.

I know bunnies don’t always like being held. I have to brush the wooly and cut mats out and after I catch her she holds still perfect while I cut away. Shadow is actually fine too, it’s just getting them. I feel bad because they hate being caught.
