› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Has Anyone Seen A Waterer Like This Before?
Hello all, I’ve been Googling for I don’t know how long and I just can’t seem to remember where I saw this specific waterer that I would like to buy!
It kind of looks like this: http://www.lixit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc
It is the same concept as those but if I remember correctly it takes standard plastic water bottles (like the ones us humans buy to drink from). I remember thinking oh that’s a good idea! But now I fail to remember if I saw it online or in a store. I’m pretty sure I didn’t make it up because I’m not creative enough…
It is getting pretty hot here and I just thought it would be nice if I could have something that uses water bottles so that I can freeze a bunch half full and in the morning before I leave just fill it up the rest of the way and leave it for my bunny to drink. That way she’ll have cold water longer since I won’t be home to toss ice cubes in her bowl.
I might be going nuts… but I’m pretty sure I saw them somewhere!
I’ve seen portable ones like that. It’s a regular old water bottle with a trough attached by a hinge to a cap which releases water into the trough when the trough is released so that it’s an L shape with the bottle being the | and the trough being the _. It folds up so it takes up about the same amount of space as a regular water bottle.
You could make your own bunnycage version. It would be pretty easy I think… you have to figure it out for yourself though.
PS. You make me miss my Hawaiian bffl. I didn’t even get to say bye to her when we graduated =( Her brother is Danny Carvalho he plays slack key… I’m not sure how well known he is but I heard him on NPR once. She gave me a lei at graduation so via email this week we decided that was both a congratulatory and a goodbye lei. Sigh =(
EDIT: Oh! my bffl also went to Punahou, so she saw Obama speak before he was prez.
Saw them at walmart last week. They’re with the cat or dog stuff. They just use a standard soda bottle. I never thought of freezing them so she has cold water all evening. That’s a great idea. Maybe I DO need that type of water dish. Freya is just so messy, she’s always putting hay in her water. Maybe she likes flavored water?
You would have to do a trial run with one of those waterers to see if they work. Once you freeze the bottle it is heavier- so it might get tipped over easier. And the ice in the bottle will probably not uniformly melt and allow the water reservoir to refill with cold water- it could become trapped by ice in the bottle and actually WITHHOLD water from your rabbit.
Good point. ^ Maybe use frozen one then have regular bowl of water around also.
I googled some images and only found this:
on amazon Supplier Get Organized (but seems out of stock).

and I found this: ![]()

Thanks everyone! I should definitely go check out Walmart and see what they have. I was thinking about how much water to freeze and what angle I should freeze it at to minimize the blockage. And I was thinking of either weighting down the bottom or somehow securing the bottle part to the fencing around where she stays during the day to prevent it from falling down. I’m still thinking about if this would work or not
. Just and idea I’m kicking around. If all else fails she always has her normal crock that is way too heavy for her to spill!
About that picture with pug… I thought we shouldn’t encourage our furry friends to drink from toilets? ;P
sibley – The name sounds familiar but I don’t think I’ve heard his music. I didn’t go to Punahou but it must’ve been cool to have the future president visit your school! Hope you and your friend keep in touch! If you ever are cold or have time you could come visit the little rocks in the Pacific
.
Adalaide – My bunny used to toss hay in the water all the time. I think after she did it though she wouldn’t want to drink it… I ended buying a dish with a dome on the back of it to try to deflect some of the hay!
I got these great bowls for her. They’re stainless steel and purple on the outside. They’re huge and flat and wide and heavy. I thought I totally scored, I mean, she can’t tip over a bowl that’s 6 inches across and an inch deep right? Heck, they don’t even have an edge she can get her mouth around to pick them up.
She tips them. A lot.
Oh yeah, maybe try Sprite 20 ounce bottles? The shape is really wierd and you might be able to freeze water in the bottom, then just fill it the rest of the way with cold water and maybe the ice will stay because of the shape?
Sillies, mass can’t be created or destroyed. If you freeze a bottle of water it’s going to weigh the same before you freeze it as after. It’ll grow, but it’ll weigh the same. Ice has a lower density than water (it floats, ya?) but it also expands to make up the difference… frozen = liquid
And on that note, if the ice is loose in the bottle it should float to the top and allow the liquid to come out the bottom. I think you’d need a larger than average bottle for this to work well, though… due to the nature of the system. If it’s too small the frozen part will stop enough water from exiting…
Hey, when I’m posting in the middle of the night I generally forget things like basic science. (I also apparently am still really tired, I had to look up how to spell science. I wish Freya would come out from under the couch so I could go to bed.)
Sibley, you so beat me to it 😉 I was going ot post exactly the same thing. I guess it’s the engineer in me 🙂
=P and I only cared because I miss school… sigh, two weeks out.
I guess I tried to block out school after I graduated because I didn’t want to think of all the homework I did. I was thinking if the bottle was actually all ice because all the water drained out into the dish. If it might not be able to slow drip because part of the ice was cutting off the bottle mouth. But then I guess that part of the ice would be melting too so maybe it doesn’t matter.
Sitting at my computer all day makes me forget how the real world works sometimes
.
I use waterers like that only huge for my dogs they are 3 gallon bottles lol. I keep 2 outside so when I take my dogs out they have something to drink and actually freeze half the water in the bottle then run a little warm water to loosen the ice and fill it the rest of the way it works well for me. My bunnies have claimed one in the house as theirs and won’t let the dogs near it lol. I got all mine from walmart.
