Rats love to shred- give them little boxes and tubes- they will reduce them to shreds overnight. My rats never really played with toys. They are highly social- they want to play “chase” with you or a another rat companion. If you have a single female, consider getting her another female friend.

Rats should NEVER be kept alone. Just like humans who are kept in isolation as punishment, they experience depression, compulsions, and anger problems. Your friend should get her a healthy companion as soon as possible.

Just in the two weeks my spayed female has been alone since my old man died, she has began over-grooming and her tumor has nearly doubled in size (wish me luck at the vet this afternoon.)

Anything that is good for parrots is usually good for rats (both have high intelligence). I have what I believe is called a treasure chest (parrot toy) It’s filled with little wooden blocks that they have to get out through the different shaped holes in the sides. I like to stick treats in here as well, and it’s a hit along with newspaper, cardboard, and fleece scraps to make nests.

See if you can direct your friend towards gooseemoose. It is easily the best and most informative rat forum on the entire internet.

I don’t, but I know that they make awesome pets,  but as someone esle said, they are very social and need companionship.

Winslet had a “play date” with a friend’s ratty.  Ainsley was mostly in her rolly ball, but came out for sniffings.  They seemed curious about each other.

I would totally have one, if they weren’t-get this, illegal here! We are apparently a rat free province. I have heard they are fantastic pets though-I’d love one. So smart

I would think things safe for bunnies are safe for rats? But I’m not sure.

Here is a page with fun stuff for rats. My rats loved fishing for peas.
