Not on actual Earth Day, but I’m volunterring for an event on Saturday. I’m a member of a car-sharing service called I-Go and I’ll be working the table at NorthSide EarthFest. I get driving credits for the work but I also really believe in the product which helps.
I-go is a local non-profit company that puts vehicles in neighborhoods around Chicago and the suburbs. All the vehicles are either low-emission or hybrids, and there are even a couple of vans and a small pickup truck. You pay an annual membership fee to join ($75 but they run specials all the time, and then $25 per year after that) and then you can reserve and use the cars whenever you want. Cost varies depending on the plan you choose – I commit to paying $15/month (includes gas, maintenance and insurance! )and for that I get 3 hours use with any additional hours being $8.50/10 depending on the time and kind of vehicle. I live and work in the city so I take public transit to work and most errands, so this works out great for a morning or evening of running errands or picking up things too heavy to take on the bus (groceries, IKEA, Sams Club, etc).
Plus I found a guy on craigslist that took down two apple trees and was listing the wood – I got him to save a BUNCH of the smaller bits for me, and he saved so many that I’m taking a big bunn-dle over to the Red Door Shelter so that all the shelter bunnies can have yummy-chews! Pepper adores them.
