› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Hammer’s day out!
Ok well not outside, just out of my room and his usual play area. A few days ago Hammer got to experience what it would be like to be free range and he absolutely loved it!
He also got to mingle with all the other animals in the house. One dog, Molly, followed Hammer like it was her mission in life and Hammer just wanted her to stop sniffing him like crazy so Molly had to go outside after a hour or so.
Another dog, Sage, was a bit afraid of Hammer and pretended he wasnt there as best she could. Sage is a strange dog, very awkward, poor thing didnt have any contact when she was young so she is not good with social stuff now.
The oldest dog, Cinni, was terrified and it toke much praise to get her to stay in the same area as Hammer.
My cat Tiger ignored him as long as Hammer left her alone, If he came into her bubble she boxed at the air as she retreated lol.
No worries though she is declawed and harmless. My other cat Toluz never cares about much of anything, and he is the one that used to come and visit Hammer, and Hammer tried to bond with after Rose passed. He didnt mind Hammer one bit.
But anyways Hammer had a blast! He loved zooming up the stairs, going down them he had to slow down a bit. He got used to the wood floors downstairs and they didnt slow him down, though he had trouble stopping sometimes.
He lounged here for a few minutes then lounged there else so he could experience lounging everywhere, didnt want to miss anything haha. He loved to drink out of the big crock the dogs and cats use, maybe just because of its size lol. There were cords everywhere but he minded when I had to tell him no. He was definitley on his best behavior, he listen and didnt go behind the entertainment stand, computer desk, couch etc, I was so proud.
He poked his head in the cat door leading to the basement once but I told him no and he was content to sit and watch the cats pass though the little door without him and didnt try it again! I did follow him around most of the time in the beginning so I was usually at least only one room away, but he did so good that after a few hours I let him go completely and found him every so often to check on him. So Im thinking I have a perfect free ranger on my hands. So when I move out and dont have any cats and dogs running around or a mom to tell me he has to be caged maybe he can be free range!
So picture time, and you can meet most of my fur family!
Heres Hammer and Cinni

Hammer and Sage, look how nervous she is!

Hammer and Tiger, not a good pic of him at all but thats Tiger

Hammer and Toluz, He is just such an awesome cat!

Hammer resting in his cage at the end of the day after all that excitement, snuggling and grooming his Rosebun.

Those pictures are cute. Look how funny bunnies are… getting in everyone’s business like that.
I laughed when I saw Sage’s tongue sticking out.
Awww! He is so lovely! You should be proud! That is great that you can give him this new experience. Warning- the very second you think them the perfect free ranger – they prove you wrong!
Awesome pictures and fur family – love the name Sage by the way. Thanks for sharing ![]()
Sibley-Haha I didnt even notice Sages tongue. Thats so Sage though, Im telling you she is the weirdest dog. The only thing she understands is food, and she is still confused about that sometimes too! There are a few bowls all in the same area that we leave down for the dogs, but Sage will only eat out of one of them. If its empty and the others are full she will go hungry. First she barks to alert us that her bowl is empty, then pushes it around with her nose and brings it to us… so wierd.
Jersey- yes im very proud of my Hamster Baby! He was really happy that day, scared at first but quickly came around. And your probably right about once you think they will behave theyll destroy an entire room lol. I wouldnt put it past any rabbit.
A really kind of odd side note about the dogs- Both Molly and Sage are beagles, from the same litter actually. But arent beagles naturally for hunting rabbits? I thought they were at least and when I brought Hammer home I was a bit worried and thought id have to make sure they never even saw him. Anyways the litter was my moms boyfriends dogs. I fell in love with Molly and kept her. Sage was the only puppy left and he brought her over for us to watch while he was on a trip, Molly and Sage bonded and I couldnt stand to do that to Molly so now we have Sage too, but she is really his dog. Well even though im completely against it and we fight about it all the time he hunts rabbits with his dogs. I wont allow Molly to go, but Sage I cant stop. Well turns out Sage is now bunny friendly and cant hunt rabbits! Living with them has completely turned off her instincts and she just doesnt get what she is suppose to do. How cool is that!
He looks so interested in his surroundings! Thanks for sharing!
Liz, that’s amazing! You kinda won that round huh! I’m not sure but I think it’s the beagles sense of smell that is valued, so they alert the hunters to where the prey is – I don’t think they actually go in for the kill. Which is nice as it’s a favourite breed of mine!
Beagles were always a favorite breed of mine too! Except for the excessive barking theyre awesome.
Oh, my – such excitement.
How great Hammer was out with everyone.
The photo of Hammer and Toluz is awesome!
Such cute pictures! And I’m not completely surprised that your beagles don’t try to hunt him because I grew up with schnauzers, bred to chase rats and mice, who were terrified of my gerbils. Lol So you never know! Sometimes the instincts just don’t kick in the way they’re supposed to. You’re so lucky that all of your animals get along for the most part. I used to dog sit for a jack russel with very strong hunting instincts, but now that I have Otto I don’t think she’ll be able to come over anymore
. She’d drive herself nuts trying to get into a room with him and I’d be terrified that she’d find a way to get to him.
What a well behaved bun!
I ♥ the 4th pic.. Toluz: “ahh Hammer.. a little to the left ..”
n_n
aaawwww, that’s awesome, thanks for all the pics! Hammer reminds me of the small town I live in. He’s the mayor, going around to check on everyone (I love that “getting into eveyone’s business…..lol”) making sure everthing is running to his liking….probably plannng a few improvements as soonas moms not looking!
Lol yea Hammer is always wanting to disturb someone and get up in their face. Toluz especially because he tolerates it so well. I see Toluz as Fonzie from Happy Days, cool calm and relaxed. Toluz actually does summersaults when you pet his head sometimes, awesome cat.
Those are tooo cute!!! Thats so much fun when they get to come out and hang around with everyone!!!
awww!!! that is adorable. I LOVE the picture of Hammer on Toluz! What a patient kitty hahaha. Hammer’s setup is beautiful, you did a great job with it, I’m jealous!
You’re right, Beagles ARE bred for tracking and killing rabbits. My beagle is fantastic with my buns, never the slightest out of line with them.. but we have a lot of wild rabbits around, and when I take him for hikes and a rabbit runs from under a tree, he wants to chase, catch and kill(much to my dismay). Obviously I never let him go, or he’d certainly be all over them.
Obviously your Sage has a great heart!
How sweet..good for her for taking the high road, LOL!
I love those pics. It’s like Hammer is saying, “This is my dog, this is my other dog. That’s my cat, and my other cat. They all belong to me!” Do be careful tho if the rest of the house is not bun-proofed. Just b/c he was good on the first excursion, does not mean the second (or third or fourth) time he won’t be a little more “adventurous”. The last thing you need is your mom getting mad b/c he snipped a wire or chewed something he wasn’t supposed to!
