Hi there, Benny, my beloved flemish giant passed away today and the vet thinks it was likely a bad gut infection He was 7 months old

I am devastated, and wondering for the sake of my other rabbit if I could have done something differently.

I had recently fed Benny the following:

        cabbage

        strawberry plant leaves

        raspberry vine cuttings

hay (farm hay, not the fancy stuff)

        high quality pellets

        carrot

        apple

he was an inside and outside rabbit

growing in his enclosure was grass grown from lawn seed (that he wasn’t all that fond of)

I had just recently added dirt from the paddock into his enclosure for him to dig in

DO I NEED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT?

Aww that’s tragic. I am so sorry. Lots of love and support.

Cabbage is known to cause bloating and gas in rabbits so I personally wouldn’t feed it. Also when feeding vines make sure there aren’t any hard thorns on them. They could cut up and harm your bunny.

How much fruit and how often did you give fruit? Giving him too much fruit could’ve caused him to not eat his cecotropes which bunnies need to stay healthy. Same goes for too many pellets a day.
In that case how many pellets did you give in a day as well?

I hope all is going well with your other bunny.
