At the food bank yesteday I got some brocolli sprouts.   I gave the buns some last nite.   Ruby dived in.   Cotton came back to look at it on occassion.    2 hours later he decided to try it.

Tonite he scarfed it down.   I mean inhaled it.   Guess he likes it.   Ruby does too.

broccoli sprouts? You mean like alfalfa or clover sprouts you put on sandwiches? Mmmmmm! I like those too.
I thought at first you may have meant brussel sprouts…in which case, be sure there’s no lighted matches or burning candles in the house later…bunnies may go BOOM! ^_^

I love sprouts! I’ve thought about buying some for the bunny but they’re usually pretty expensive, a $3 tray would be half a bunny meal. They’re very healthy.
I recently met a guy who gave me a good tip for getting bunny food… he works at a new food co-op by my house and said I should stop by there anytime and ask for “spoilage.” That’s their word for the greens they’ve trimmed off of veggies for presentation, but are still perfectly good, and they specifically set them aside for free for people who have rabbits…?!?! Very cool. Obviously it’s got to be a place full of hippies to do something like that. But who knows, maybe other supermarkets do that too. I’m going tomorrow to check.

I wish our supermarket would do this, but they aren’t that cooperative. I found the organic carrots without tops one day and asked if I could get the tops they’d cut off and they claimed they were too nasty and they threw them away. What they define as nasty is what I’d like to know.

*sigh* Just seems like a waste to me.

I’ve given my bunnies sprouts before. Funny, they don’t think much of them. I enjoy them more than they do.
Bagel and cream cheese with alfalfa sprouts…yum!

guess we could all go fregan and go dumpster diving.        Sometimes well quite often you can find things behind the grocer stores.   IN the dumpster.     The things they throw away in boxes a lot of it is good.   Still in packages some of it.    We get lots of greens that way.

Just gotta be careful it doesn’t touch the actual dumpster itself but is in the box they threw it out in.  And wash it when you get home of course.

Beware of the plastic trash bags.   No telling what nasty stuff is in there.

There is a website about Fregan.   People who see how we americans waste so much and go dumpster diving.  One guy feeds his chickens and never buys food for them.    Others get meat still packaged and still cold  and stuff.   They say they never got sick.  hmmm.

Also I saw on a discovery channel  this one guy literally eats roadkill.   If it isn’t too putrified.   I about gagged when I saw that.  HE picked possum off the road and ate the eyes every single thing but the hide n bones n feet.   OMG    He got some bird off the road that got hit by a car.  It was too far putrified.

He invited some people over to eat  (for the tv program)   Whew.   I could not have eaten anything from there.   Barf

At this point you must be wondering what kind of strange tv programs we get here in florida   rofl.

Fregan haha. I’d never heard that term before.

MM, did you talk to the checkout clerk or someone out back in fresh produce?  It’s funny, because normally they put them out in the store with the tops on to look more appealing. You wonder how long they’ve had them if they say they too nasty to hand over.

Well, I think it may just be the transit time to Alaska from the States. Honestly, some of the stuff they put out for sale is too nasty to even think of buying. 0_o I’ve taken home more food in the last year that has either promptly gone off, or I open the package and it’s already been opened or busted out of it’s liners when I get it out to cook and it infuriates me. Such a waste of money, and somehow they get away with selling it! I could probably find fresher stuff in a dumpster! >.<
I’ll see about sending the hubby back to the storeroom there one of these times for tops…maybe his 6’2″ frame can light a fire under someone back there.

Ew…roadkill vultures. I mean, I suppose waste not, want not, but just….ewwwwww…. >.<

Yeah I’ve read about the fregans too. I don’t know how many there are in Chicago, how practical can it be during the winter? To me it seems absolutely disgusting, having worked in restaurants off and on my whole life, I don’t want to go anywhere near food that’s touched a dumpster. Occasionally if I throw out food that’s still good (like when my last roommate moved out, leaving stuff I don’t eat like cans of chili) I leave it in a bag on top of the dumpster so the homeless people that dig through our dumpsters can find it more easily. I would feel bad if they popped open a bag full of bunny poop which I’m sure they have.

MM, you need to invest in one of those aero gardens. I wonder how much power they use up? They say the light bulbs are energy efficient.

Sometimes when we throw stuff out we set it on the concrete wall so people know it is still good and someone may be able to use it.

INcluding foods  canned  foods that is.

Yes restaurant throwouts  are totally disgusting.  No telling what people had  hepetitus or what and what they blew their noses on or just down right chewed n spit out.    Wont go near that stuff.

There is a certain store we know that put out some greens in a BOX  on top the dumpster or next to it that we go pick up stuff from.  They told us what day they put it out.   It is still good.   Just that they got fresher stuff just in.     So they set it out for us the stuff still there that they have to throw out when new stuff comes in.

MM thats exactly what the roadkill guy said.   Waste not want not.     I could think of better ways to feed myself.  Road kill is so gag nauseating. Like restaurant throwouts ……. shivers….
