        Hello!
This is kind of wordy so I apologize … I’m new to the forum and I’m glad to see that it is active, so I hope I can get some suggestions. So my bunny, Kikko, has been having some issues. These issues revolve around her getting too much protein which I have recently found out- my fault and I feel horrible  She had watery eyes for the past few days and I have been unable to take her to the vet because it is finals week, gladly with the reduction of kale her eyes have cleared up. She’s been acting totally normal but now she has little mats under her eyes that she has yet to clean off.
I have an old soft-bristled baby toothbrush, and I was wondering if I can (after cleaning it obviously) use that and warm water to work out the mats under her eyes? If not, is there anything else I could use or should I just let her clean it on her own?
My second question is if there are better mixes of daily veggies with low protein, like what daily veggies do you give your rabbits? Current feeding info (Kikko is 5.15 lbs): 3/4 cups of romaine lettuce + 1/4 cup of another green leafy veggie + 1/4 cup of a non-leafy green twice a day. She gets 1/4 cup or less of pellets (Kaytee timothy pellets- it’s the only kind she’ll eat since it smells like the pellets she was given as a baby) once a day with her evening salad. + Unlimited timothy hay as per bunny usual.

        Feedback is much appreciated, thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I hope we can give you some help!

Firstly, I’ve never heard of kale causing watery eyes? I’m really not sure about that cause and effect, but I’m glad her eyes have cleared up. Why do you think that that was the problem?

With her eye, I’d probably just leave her to clean it herself, unless it’s obviously bothering her. I don’t think a soft-bristled toothbrush and warm water would harm her, but it might annoy her.

I give my rabbits romaine lettuce, kale every other day, and then a one of the following depending what I’ve got in: rocket, watercress, coriander, mint, parsley, rosemary, spinach, celery, cauliflower. Herbs are a great one to add in as a leafy veg.

Thanks! – I think the amount of protein in the kale was too much for her, I know a lot of people give kale regularly, but I guess it just doesn’t work for Kikko. I was reading up on the watery eyes and someone had mentioned that too much protein had caused that issue with their rabbit, and I had recently introduced kale.

Normally watery eyes in bunnies are caused by an allergy (to hay dust, for example), an eye infection, a respiratory infection, or overgrown teeth, so do watch out to make sure it doesn’t re-occur

Some veggies don’t work for some bunnies, but they tend to cause gas problems, or maybe chalky pee from too much calcium.

Anyway, as long as she’s fine, it doesn’t really matter why, but I wouldn’t want you to overlook something more serious because you thought the root had been solved, when maybe it was unrelated to the kale.

Hi! She looks like a very sweet bun . You could wring out a lukewarm washcloth and gently wipe the area around her eyes (just initially to help her get any eye gunk out of her fur if there is any that got stuck in there), but I wouldn’t use a brush around her eyes. Luna’s primary veggies are green leaf lettuce, endive, romaine, and watercress; her secondary veggies (fed infrequently) are kale, italian parsley, mustard greens, and bok choy.
