Hello! I’ve been a lurker here ever since I got my rabbit a few months ago, but I’ve finally decided to create an account so I could ask some questions of my own Melody is a chestnut Holland Lop (pictures to come when I work out how photo uploading actually works), 6 months and spayed. I’ve had her ever since she was 7 weeks old, which I’ve since learnt is a tad too young She lives in a cage currently, but I let her out for almost the entire day, and she’ll be moving to a bigger playpen within the next few weeks.

Melody only has two modes: being destructive, or doing nothing. This is where the aforementioned questions come in. Firstly, she is incredibly lazy, and lying on the floor is pretty much how she spends her entire day. I’ll go out into the living room to use the computer for a few hours, and when I return to my room she’ll be in the exact same position she was she in when I left her. Is this something most rabbits do, or is something wrong with her behaviour that I need to look into to?

When she’s not busy doing nothing, she’s busy destroying the house. She’s a fanatical chewer: I’ve lost countless wires to her (explaining to your parents why you’ve gone through two pairs of earpieces in three weeks is not fun), and recently she’s become fixated on this piece of coroplast I use to keep her in my room. It’s a bit horrifically impressive, because she’s chewed a hole almost as big as her. Is there anyway to get her to stop doing this, because the sounds she creates when attacking the coroplast is just loud enough to annoy everyone in the house.

Lastly, Melody REALLY doesn’t like affection. She doesn’t like petting, or nose rubs, or anything other rabbits like. The only thing she actually likes is food. I know it’s not because she’s fearful: I’ve had her since she was young, and she has no qualms about flopping around me, or even on me (even tiny rabbits are painful when they slam themselves onto your foot). She eats from my hand, and is completely unterritorial. She just has more interest in interacting with newspapers than she does with me >_> Is it because I’m doing something wrong while interacting with her( e.g. sometimes I will get on the floor and go “HI MELODYYYYYYY” and she’ll look completely done with me), or is it because this is just her personality?

This is kind of long, but these are questions I’ve wanted to ask for a long time now. Any help’ll be appreciated, and thanks so much for reading all the way!

Hi greetings from England, don’t worry about your bunny being more interested in newspaper, mine is the same, we just have to put up with it sometimes and when they get fed up they come back to you, as for chewing ugh yes, I’m always hiding my wires from my bunny, I have expensive microphones and headphones, because I’m a chat room moderator and need them for my work, so best thing is out of sight out of mind when not in use, if you sit on the floor and she comes to you give her some fruit or veg she likes, rabbits like that, not all rabbits like to be picked up and stroked, because rabbits are ground animals, also if they are going through teenage years they can be like teenagers going into their room and ignoring everyone, like a big brother doing what he wants to do like listen to music and his mum calls him for dinner, but he wants to listen to rock music, I don’t think you have anything to worry about, my bunny is a chewer and loves his grass ball filled with fruit or veg and hay, usually these grass balls don’t last long but his is going on 2 weeks

Check out this thread. You really need to find a way to keep those wires out of her reach. She won’t likely outgrow that behavior anytime soon. Besides being dangerous,it makes them very unloved family members when they keep destroying people’s stuff. The first time is a bit funny. Not so much after that. As far as the coroplast, well, some people try different sprays and such to discourage the chewing. Some find simply using a perfume or body spray might work. Sounds like she’s having fun with it, though, and they do need stuff to chew on. I had a hidey box made for my rabbit out of pine and didn’t have it sealed or anything because I was sure he’d chew it. Nope. No interest. Maybe I should get some coroplast!
