        Hello forum members,

I ran across this wonderful little forum while trying to gain more knowledge and information about raising bunnies. We learned quite a bit from our local vet ( who also sees our 3 wonderful cats ) but we are still a long way from knowing all that we probably should. We want to make sure our little guys are healthy and happy and getting the proper food and such. My goal is to move them out of the cage they came in to a new one sometime this Summer ( or sooner ). I have found a few I like at local stores, but if I can get away with it, I’d like to build one of my own. ( Both an indoor and outdoor location )

Besides wanting to make sure they are eating properly, I was hoping to gain knowledge on what material would be best to build the habitat from. ( Such as wood, protective material to keep them from chewing a way out of it. Haha, etc )

        1. Are you new to rabbits or have you been a bunny slave for a long while now? : Quite new. Rookie all the way.
        2. What made you choose to have a rabbit companion in your life? : Wife was interested in having one. ( We ended up with 2 since the lady said the brothers tended to stick together – we couldn’t go without taking him too )
        3. Anything else that you’d like to share – hobbies, interests, talents.: Murder Mysteries, Ghost Town / Ghost Hunting,

I should introduce myself as well. My name is Micah G. I am 39 years old and currently hail from the Western part of Montana. I am newly married ( our year anniversary is in June ) and have one 18 year old biological daughter and 3 step-daughters. Besides our lovely adopted bunnies, we have 3 cats that are all siblings that we rescued as well. ( They are Tank, Niko and Sissy )

Thank you all for allowing me to be a member of this forum. I look forward to learning what I can about raising bunnies and hopefully how to make a new house for them to enjoy.

Welcome! You definitely came to thrme right place — lots of great people here and loads of bunny info. Can’t wait to see pics of your bunnies!

BTW, take a look at dog exercise pens (xpens) when looking at cages. Highly recommended around here!

            Wellcome!

I hope you’ll like it here!
The habitat-section may give you some ideas about housing. Brief notes on building sth outdoors, for un-attended recreational time: it should have netting on all sides incl on the ground and the net should be welded, not chicken-wire, to keep predators like birds, ferrets, house cats, foxes out and the bunnies in. Use untreated wood. (You can paint it for weather-resistance.) If you make a hutch-section, it should ideally be elevated off the ground, and provide shelter from wind and rain + it shouldn’t be placed directly in the sun because bunnies are very sensitive to heat.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I apologize for my long delay in responding. I wanted to thank everyone that replied with such warm welcomes.

@JackRabbit – Thank you. I took a few, but it said the photos were too big. But maybe this link : https://instagram.com/p/42HHZjIC07/ will work. Hans is the one in the front and Olaf is behind him. Hans seems to be the more aggressive / feisty one as of late. Both have been recently “snipped” too.

@bam – Thank you. I will take a gander in that department. We had some plans for an outdoor enclosure and a 2-3 foot fencing around that. Like a double fencing. One for the buns to romp around in and then the 2nd one as a protective barrier to give a few feet clearance against other outside dangers.

@michel Tomato? Interesting. Haven’t thought of that. Ours likes a little bit of raw potato. Next time we’re shopping, I’ll pick up one to try out. See what they think. They do seem to like pea pods, Romaine, Carrots and the greens ( though we limit on the carrot itself, I’ve been told anyway ) … and plenty of hay and grains. Also they love the Kale.

Thank you everyone for the informative and kind words. We are hoping to be able to expand their little environment and all to give them more room to run, hide and play. Right now, way too much carpet that we don’t want them to tear up. And they tend to slip and slide in the bathroom ( the linoleum flooring )
