Grain dewormer for bunnies…

Hi All,

My bunny girl, Fiddle, is five months old and I think I may have found a worm in her droppings. I took her to the vet who did an examination and a fecal test, but found nothing. She said that it may be pinworms and told me to get a pinworm dewormer at petsmart. Turns out Petsmart doesn’t have it and a lot of people use horse dewormer at a tiny dose (it has the same active ingredient). So I’m using an alfala based grain dewormer for my girl. 

I calculated the dose, but the problem is, the she doesn’t like the taste of the grain . . . at all. When I give it to her plain, she won’t touch it and when I mix it with her Oxbow food, she picks out the good stuff and tips the medicated pellets onto the floor.  I was thinking of sprinkling juice from a fruit over them or something like that. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could get her to eat this stuff? I really need to start her on the dewormer now!

Im surpised the vet didn’t give you a wormer.

What’s the active ingredient in the pellets?
For pinworms, use fenbendazole (often known as panacur). Its usually available OTC though I don’t think pet stores would carry it. A farm supply / feed store would or try online.

petsmart end petco have fenbendazole in sachets for cats and dogs. U would just have to do the math for the doseage. But it is cheaper at a feedstore.

The vet said she didn’t have one for pinworms, only a general… The active ingredient in the pellets is fenbendazole, so I’m working with her to try to eat it I’ve done the calculations so hopefully it works. If only she liked the taste of them

Hmmm… I’ll bet the vet has fenbendazole in liquid form.
The only tme I’ve tried to feed a medicated pellet – is the myristol pellets. My rabbit didnt’ like them, and the only way I could get him to eat the pellets was to either grind them and syringe feed, or grind and smoosh into a banana, or grind and add to his hay cookie recipe. But sometimes the flavor is so overpowering that it takes way more banana than pellets – to get him to eat it.

Grinding them is actually a great idea…She’s started eating them (not happpily) but if she stops I’ll be using the grinding method Also, I’d love your recipe for his hay cookie–even if I’m not using it for medication, it sounds fun

1 cup ground oats
1/4 cup ground pellets
2 bunches parsley
1/2 banana
1/2 carrot
6-8 Tbsp water (as much water as it takes to make the cookie dough workable)

Depending on yoru blender – the parsley frings better fresh or frozen. Blend everything – form cookies and dehydrate. I use a small watermelon scoop to form cookies. I dont’ bake them, I put them int he dehydrator on the lowest heat setting. 24-36 hours later they are dry.
