Good vacuum for cleaning bunny room

Hello there,

So i have had my bunny Pinky for 9 amazing months now. Every time i clean his cage and floor time area, i have to bend down

on my knees, and use a brush to sweep up the hay.

I need a vacuum cleaner that is not too expensive and that can handle fur and hay. And it would be nice if it’s not too loud, since

Pinky get scared of loud noises.

Do any of you guys know any good brands?

Also i live in Denmark.

Hi Aria,
I had a rubbish vacuum cleaner and it took me FOREVER to clean, we have so many animals and there are dust bunnies everywhere ALL THE TIME! When my machine died, it was a blessing in disguise. I bought the most awesome vacuum I’ve ever known. It hoovers up anything, the suction is fantastic, it’s bagless, just brilliant. Although I go around and pick up most of the poops and larger pieces of stray hay it handles most things effortlessly.
Now I bought this in December 2013 and can’t seem to find it online anywhere, not sure if it’s been discontinued. It’s a VAX model V-2200U U88-VU-R-A, a specialist model for consumers with pets. If you can’t find it anywhere I’m sure they will have brought out a better, shinier version. With such good suction however, you will get noise. It’s very noisy, we move the buns out of the room so they don’t get too stressed out.

I use a Miele vacuum. A model from their S Series. I’ve been happy with it. It has variable power settings and the lower ones are very quiet.

I don’t know how it would go with hay normally. I use an attachment that prevents debris going into the flexible hose or bag. It fits to the first straight length of pipe. It saves on the bags and prevents hose getting clogged.

Some people have found a carpet sweeper had been good for picking up hay.

Hey! I asked a similar question not too far back

I now use a Harry vaccum.
It’s a Henry (The red ones with the faces on… You know?) except the harry has a couple of extra features for people with pets.

I really like it, it doesn’t get clogged except when the bag needs to be changed.
It’s as loud as any vaccum is I think, but my bunnies have just got used to it. With my girl I just Hoover around her, she doesn’t flinch, haha!

If the hay is really bad, I’ll sweep up the worst of it before I Hoover.

I’m loving BinkyBunny, so many nice people with so much information.

I have found a good vacuum cleaner that is also for pets. It’s a BOSCH model called ProAnimal. 

It takes me 2 hours every afternoon to clean. Hopefully it will take me less time with the help of a vacuum cleaner.

We have a roomba (pet edition) and it actually does a very good job! The other vacuum we have has kind of stopped picking stuff up well but it was a cheaper one. The roomba does pick up hay pretty well honestly and it’s cool to just hit a button and then go check on it and empty the bin. Plus Nessie likes to play with it.

We have a Dyson Animal Complete — actually got it more because we have a lab who sheds year-round.  It does fine with bunny messes, but I didn’t want to drag it out everyday so we got a ShopVac contractor edition which has a larger diameter hose than other models.  It sucks up hay, litter, willow pieces, and anything else we’ve tried.  The only time it clogged was when I sucked up a pile of litter which happened to contain a seagrass twist and a pine cone . . . my little boy bunny went through a phase where one of his “projects” was to empty his litter box and bury his least favorite chew toys in the litter.

I’m really surprised! I always thought they wouldn’t be that great but I have to say, I’ve never seen one in action. Bonus that it also entertains Nessie. That’s cute!

Personally, I’m a fan of wet/dry vacs (aka shop vacs)… preferably one with a 1 3/4” or larger diameter hose (rather than 1 1/4”). Pretty much anything other than a shop vac tends to eventually succumb to the demands a bunny room places on it. With a shop vac, worst case scenario is that the hay clogs the hose (which can be easily fixed with a wire coat hanger).

I’m not sure about Denmark, but in the US you can get a decent bunny-friendly wet/dry vac for $50 or less at any home improvement store (a decent traditional vacuum costs at least $70). As an added bonus, if your bathtub ever clogs late at night and you figure you’ll deal with it in the morning only to have a god-forsaken tree roach (which, if you’re like me, you’re terrified of) pick that exact night to invade your home and suicide at the bottom of the half-full bath tub, you’ll be able to deal with it without violating your “I don’t pick up roach corpses except with a vacuum” rule, heh. (That’s actually what prompted me to go out and buy the wet/dry vac in the first place, lol… but it sure came in handy with the bunnies afterward!)
