GI stasis scare or is bunny upset with me?

Hi guys! So I just moved back home from my apartment where I was staying for the summer for an internship. I moved out yesterday and of course took Cinnabun with me back to my parents’ house. She’s been to my parents’ house once before and LOVES it, because I let her free roam in the dining room and she has a lot more space than the apartment! 

Now ever since this afternoon she’s been acting weird. Yesterday all day she was fine, same with this morning. This afternoon I went to groom her with her brush (she HATES grooming), and after I put her back she began cowering under the desk in the dining room. It’s not a dangerous spot for her to be but she has been there practically all day. She’s been hopping around some when I come in the room but other than that she will stay there. I was worried because she hadn’t moved for hours so I moved her litter box towards her since she wouldn’t come out, and she started muching on some hay that was sticking out but wouldn’t come out.

I tried luring her with food but she didn’t really want to come out unless she feels like it. I’m getting really worried because she made a couple of poos back there (she is litter trained) and they are very small poos, which is why I’m scared of GI stasis. 

I just lured her back to her cage with her dinner and she went in there, I also blocked off the area because I didn’t want her going back under – I don’t want that to be her safe space, I want it to be her cage. It’s not exactly dangerous but it’s not exactly the safest spot either. Right now she’s in her litter box eating some hay and munching on her dinner so she is eating alright, the poops and weird behavior just scare me! It’s not like her to be that way. I’m wondering if she’s scared of me because of grooming (I’ve brushed her probably 4 times before and she despises every instance)

Should I be worried? She is seeing the vet tomorrow morning for a check-up but I’m wondering if it’s ok to wait til then… I might be overreacting in which case I apologize, I do worry a lot about everything (especially her) in general!!! Thanks everybun

Hi, I’m new here but just had a severe GI Stasis issue with my boy. How is he right now? Give his tummy some massages, does he feel bloated? Is he breathing really really quickly band exposing his teeth? Are his ears extra hot / cold?

If she’s eating and drinking and appears normal now, I think it’s safe to wait until the vet appt.
It is an observadum though, if a bun hides and wont come out. That she eventually did come out for her dinner is great. Do you have baby gas drops (simethicone) at home? According to Medirabbit, it can be given on suspicion of gas. Gas is often secondary to a slight gut slowdown, and if the gas can’t escape, it hurts. Gas drops often help within 20 minutes or so.

Hi friends! Thanks for your concern she was fine this morning and made lots of poops throughout the night that look normal. The only thing I’m concerned about is she didn’t eat much of her breakfast. I gave it to her 2 hours ago and she still hasn’t finished, but usually gobbles it up. She did eat some hay though so I’m not really sure what to think.

bam, I’ll definitely pick up some gas drops today especially for future scares. I’m bringing her to the vet in less than an hour so we will see what the vet says. Will update afterwards. Thanks all!

Update!! So the vet said Cinnabun’s tummy seems okay and since she’s been eating and pooping that it shouldn’t be too much of a concern. It turns out her teeth are a little bit overgrown so she could be experiencing some discomfort from that. Vet said to encourage her to eat more hay to grind down her teeth so I think I will tone down the veggies for a couple of weeks and grab some Oxbow hay stacks from the pet store. I gave her some wooden sticks to play with and she loves chewing on them, she’s been at it for quite some time today so hopefully that will help her teeth wear down.

Vet also gave me some critical care just in case I need it… I’ve been watching Cinnabun for the past few hours, she seems fine, pretty active and hopping around but hasn’t eaten anything except for a timothy hay treat. She also has made only a couple of very small poops. Not sure if it’s because she’s angry/stressed about the vet or something else she was definitely not happy about being at the vet, she clung to me the whole time and squirmed when he cut her nails!

Try Oxbow Orchard, if you’re not currently using it, to try to encourage more hay eating. Most rabbits seem to love that. Or you could try Oxbow Oat.

Thanks LittlePuffyTail, I have been using Oxbow Timothy Hay but picked up an Oxbow Blend Hay which includes both Timothy and Orchard. She doesn’t really prefer it over the other hay though so I’ll experiment some more.

I’ve noticed she has a larger appetite at night and is mostly active then, I’m wondering if I’m only noticing these things because I’ve been home during the day these past few days since my internship just ended. But she seems a lot better now – watched her finish her dinner and I’ve been sneaking hay into that! The vet called today to check up on her and suggested to continue monitoring her and if her appetite goes down, then I should bring her in for teeth trimming.
