gi stasis and pink eye???

hello!! I’m new here

ok so I have a little lionhead bun, Mocha, and she is almost 3 years old. Just recently she had her first case of gi stasis. We took her to the vet and got some meds and she seems to be recovering well  . This is the first time I’ve ever dealt with gi stasis and I was wondering how you can tell if or when she is completely healed?? Is it when they are pooping and eating well again??? And also, do rabbits get gi stasis a lot??? Also, will brushing the fur and exercise help prevent gi stasis?

And for the pink eye issue I am not certain of what it really is but I was hoping I could get some advice or insight on what it might be. The lower half of Mocha’s right eye, on the white part, seems to be a bit pink. Just the lower half. She doesn’t seem to be in pain and doesn’t close her eye or scratch at it or anything so I am not sure if it is something I should be worried about or not.

Good to hear your bunny is doing better again. Yes, when eating and toileting again, they are “out of the woods”.

Did her eye issue coincide with the stasis episode?
Very often, stasis is a response to pain or stress. It’s not always from something like a blockage.

I think a vet does a stain test in the eye which will show if there is any abrasions. Usually a pain med and antibiotic is prescribed as some eye issues can be painful.

I would pop back into the vet about the eye-eye infections are super easy and cheap to treat, but left untreated they can cause permanent damage or blindness. So I would pop in

GI stasis is not unusual nor super frequent-that’s not a great answer! When you get to the vet for the eye, have your bunnies teeth examined. Often a misalignment of the teeth can be the culprit-My Rupert has bad teeth and the stasis is his sign we’re overdue for the bunny dentist. It could be just an oddity but usually there is a cause. So aside from the emergency treatment, you’d want a follow up consultation to see if you can figure out the cause. Brushing won’t hurt but fur is unlikely to be the cause.

Bunnies on an inappropriate diet are more prone to stasis and tummy problems. What is your buns current diet?

She has unlimited Timothy hay to eat and we usually give her about half a bowl of pellets which I think are alfalfa hay based. But she doesn’t really eat her pellets though… I was thinking of switching to see if she’ll like timothy hay based ones better. Oh and we also give her some romaine lettuce.
Her eye is barely pink now so that’s good but I would still really want to take her to the vet just in case, but the decision is up to my parents :/ the gi stasis was quite costly and I don’t think they would be too happy on taking her to the vet again, but I will still try to convince them to let me

I would switch to timothy pellets and give her more of a variety of veggies. You have to introduce each new veggie very slowly. Check out the Bunny Info section here on BB for more info on the best diet for your bunny.

mmm thank you I did check it out and I was wondering about the fruit? My vet said that they are too high in sugar and shouldn’t give my rabbit any but from what I read small amounts are okay? And umm do you feed your buns only organic fruits and veggies?
I’m sorry about all the questions, I’m a first time bunny owner and just want to make sure

Fruit should only be given as a treat (and carrots too). No more than 1TBSP per day. Of course, if your bunny has never had fruit, start with less than that. My buns get several treats a day but just tiny pieces. I feed organic when I can, but most of what I buy I can’t find or it’s way too expensive. Organic is not necessary. Just make sure you wash everything well.
