I’m so sick to my stomach. Really close to where I live in a meat farm, and they advertised on craigslist for LIVE MEAT NEW ZELAND RABBITS! I’m so sick right now. I want to save them all. Ugh. Is that legal and okay to do? Are there cruelty laws or something?! I want to puke right now, so sad. Apparently they breed rabbits for meat.

It’s sad for us to think about, but I don’t think it’s illegal anywhere to breed rabbits for meat. The only thing I can think of is possible zoning laws, for example: Maybe you can breed rabbits on farms, but you can’t do it in an apartment building or suburban residential area? I don’t know for sure, it’s just a guess. If you were to call and report this person, they may check out the place and as long as certain conditions are being met (shelter/food), they would give them the green light.

We try to keep “hot button topics” off of BB, and this includes discussion of rabbits used for meat. I answered this as it was a very direct question, but if any responses become argumentative, the post will be deleted.

It is sad as Beka stated and it’s not illegal HOWEVER you should check the city ordinances where this is happening about keeping animals as Beka stated. If it’s in a city there are usually rules for keeping animals – if it’s rural, probably not so much.

Usually the website municode.com has a list of most cities ordinance codes – this is a good resource for you especially if you plan on going into rescue work to look up what the actual codes are rather than guessing what they may be.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to post something about a controversial topic. I understand if it needs to be deleted but thank you so much for the help! I was able to get the ad taken off of craigslist so that will stall them for the time-being. I’m going to keep looking into stuff. Thanks!

You’re fine. I just posted that as a general warning, esp for newer members who may not be aware of the rules yet.

I would check out the city ordinances regarding that. Where I live, you are allowed to have up to 5 chickens within the city limits. And yeah, the guy across the street from us doesn’t have chickens in his backyard as pets. So definitely make sure there are ordinances regarding the rabbits. At the very least, you may be able to get an inspection. They will make sure the rabbits are being kept “properly”.
