Getting my girl spayed soon!

Hi again!  I have some general questions about spaying.  I have read around different websites about it and whatnot, but I’m just so anxious about it.  Sirius is due to get spayed September 19th.  I’m worried.  They didn’t really tell me what to expect or how it will go or anything.  Agh.  They said they do a check up beforehand, which is good….  (Sirius is a lionhead dwarf rabbit.  I guess dwarves mature faster than other breeds? ???)

Along with wondering about the general process, I’m wondering how much this will really help her litter habits?  I’ve been struggling SO MUCH trying to litter train Sirius. (Help is still welcome on my thread asking about it!  Please! Lol.)  I swear she seems to get the idea, but she is just stubborn.  About 60% of the time she will listen when I tell her “Litterbox” meaning to get in her litterbox,…..  And she’ll scamper into it.  But ONLY if she is close to it (why? Does she not understand the command when she’s further away from it…?) Sometimes I’ll tell her to get in it randomly as she’s running around, to prevent accidents, and other times it’s right after she’s had an accident.  But sometimes I KNOW she hears me, but she just doesn’t seem to be paying attention?  Or deliberately chooses to ignore me….  Lol.  Which do you think?   I’m thinking she knows better and knows what she’s supposed to do, but her territorial urges to mark are too overwhelming for her to ignore and use the box correctly.

My other question, how did your girl buns act after they were spayed?  Right now Sirius is full of so much energy.  She binkies so much sometimes she’ll lose sight of where she’s going and ram into a wall Seems unphased and keeps going afterwards, but I feel like she is sooooo much more full of energy than other rabbits I’ve ever known and even heard about on here.  I would LOVE for her to mellow out some and love Love LOVE for her to become cuddly after this and enjoy just sitting on my couch with me or something, but I love her regardless of course.  How much of a change did you guys see with your lady rabs and how long did it take?

I certainly understand your bun’s concept of losing sight! Our male bun often forgets the idea of spacial awareness and binkies off the end of the bed (thankfully we have a thick carpet!). 

My female bun is more or less exactly the same as she was before being spayed, the only exception is that she has lost any territorial aggression towards us due to her hormones. She has always been an exceptionally placid bunny anyway, but I could pinpoint the exact day the hormones really started to kick in. When you first have Sirius spayed she will probably have little desire for any form of interaction as she’ll be sore and healing. Taffy took about a week to be fully back to herself although she perked up on a day by day basis.

Thanks  do you have any close-up photos of Sirius? She looks beautiful from your pic. 

We didn’t allow Taffy outside of her 4×2 (panel) run which is roughly 23sq ft. In honesty, she showed no interest in leaving her run for the first 5-7 days anyway even when the door was open. If Sirius is anything like Taffy she probably won’t care for anything or anyone for the first couple of days; Taffy did nothing but lay around for the first 24-48 hours with a fair bit of tooth grinding. 

The only thing I think you can do to help is just to keep an eye on her. Make sure she is eating and drinking – I would purchase a plastic syringe just in case you need to force feed her (your vet will probably offer more in depth advice regarding this), check her operation area regularly to ensure it’s not infected and that Sirius hasn’t been tugging at the incision and just to keep her warm, feeling safe and in a quiet area. We kept both our buns in our bedroom and kept the door permanently closed and didn’t watch TV in there until they had recovered; although, low volume probably would have been suffice. We also removed all ‘jumpable’ items from both Rolo’s and Taffy’s recovery area for a week, it’s probable that Sirius won’t be tempted to jump on anything as she will be in discomfort but it’s best to remove any temptation. 

Our buns are primarily outdoor rabbits until we purchase our own house (hopefully within the next 12-18 months) so we brought both of them in before their ops several days in advance so they could acclimatise to their new surroundings to minimise any extra stress. If Sirius is already an indoor bun this won’t be an issue I suspect – I would make sure that you don’t change her food from now until she has fully recovered post-op either.

First and second time bun owner over the last 12 months so I’m sure someone more experienced could offer more advice but our vet was more than happy with how we approached both operations pre-op and post-op.

I have lots of photos on my profile on here. (: She is so pretty.  She’s tiny!  She is a lionhead dwarf rabbit, but I do wonder if she’ll ever get any bigger.  She’s about the size of a three month old kitten I’d say, lol. 

Thank you so much!  Sirius is already indoors.  I’ll be sure to keep things quiet.  I’ll probably even put a blanket in her cage with her so she feels cuddly and warm.
