Hi!
After we lost our amazing little Violet in August, I wanted to get another bunny to keep me company (I work out of town half of the week and so, this is my traveling bunny). Enter Zeus! He’s a black Holland Lop. He was hand-raised by the breeder because he was part of a large litter and had failure-to-thrive. She felt since he was used to being handled (and spoiled), he’d be a good match for us! He was born on June 18th and he came home with us on September 1st. He’s absolutely adorable and he’s very sweet (though he doesn’t snuggle like my Violet).
When we got him, the breeder assured us he was a male. We have two other bunnies (one male and one female) and I definitely remember by the time the male was this age, he was ready for neutering! However, I don’t see any evidence of “maleness” with Zeus and I’m thinking he may be a she. I was waiting to take him to the vet for the initial visit before having him neutered (mostly because Violet’s vet bills were over $1200 and I’m trying to hold off a bit).
I’ve flipped him/her over and I do not see any evidence of testicles. He is also very fluffy, so it’s hard to tell…
Any suggestions for how I can determine his gender with untrained eyes?!
TIA!
Hmm I can’t really be of much help here, but I do know that males “drop” at different ages, so he might just need more time.
That said, it’s very hard to sex young bunnies, so I’m not sure how the breeder was so certain if he hadn’t dropped yet!

I agree, he might just be a late developer. Wick has a dwarf bun (Wick!) and although they usually develop early, his testicles didn’t appear until 8 months of age. I recall a former forum leader here who had a holland lop who had his at 8 weeks. ![]()
To get more of an idea, you’d have to take closer look at the genitals and see what reveals itself when you apply some pressure. Note; bBoth the vagina and penis will protrude when you do this.

Thanks! Our male “dropped” early and it was quite a scene…plus, he tried to mate with our German Shepherd, a small stuffed moose, and a blanket…So, we had him neutered (I have a husband and three sons…I did not need any more testosterone in the house
!). I am not sure why the breeder was so certain – good point.

The bunny also runs around making the buzzing/humming noise – I can’t remember if our girl did that! I will definitely look again tomorrow – thank you!
It’s possible he’s drawing them back in when you pick him up to look.
My 1st rabbit, Jersey, did the humming noise when she started to mature.

I had a 9 year old foster at my house for about 12 hours that was unneutered, and even at that age he just circled and nipped at my feet constantly trying to mount them! He was also SO STINKY!

Thank you so much!
Boys – sigh! ![]()
Here are some pictures we took today! Thoughts?! Thanks!

I think boy. Looks a like one of my bunnies bits (lol, geez that seems strange to say!)
That gap is more typical of boys also.
If your female will allow it, (
) it helps to do a comparison. You’ll see there is not that gap of skin like on the boy.
Ha, we tried the comparison with the girl…it looked pretty similar, but what do we know?!
Thanks for your expertise…BTW, I think it’s a boy too!
The pictures in this thread though
!
It’s hard to see enough detail in those pictures. Going by spacing, I agree with Jersey.

Thanks so much! We have an appointment with the vet next week…I’ll be sure to post and update
!
That’s good. Plenty of time to plan a gender reveal party. ![]()

Exactly!
Pink or blue? Who knows? Maybe it’s going to be mint green
! I don’t care as long as it is healthy!
Thank you for weighing in on the “sexing” of Zeus…we had a visit with the vet today…Our little failure to thrive, dropper-fed bunny, weighed in at 2.5 pounds! And it’s a BOY! I actually didn’t care all that much, but I did love the name Zeus and wasn’t sure how Zeusette would go over
!
He got a report card after his visit and the vet noted, “We will neuter Zeus in the next few weeks; this should help stop his “manly” behaviors.”
I’m just hoping it will stop him from urinating in every possible inch of ground he covers.
Thanks again for your support and input!
Yay! Congrats on your boy!
