Gas? When to start worrying?

I mentioned this in the chat thread. Leopold has not been himself the last couple of days. I noticed when he didn’t want to eat his pellets or hay and he was sitting hunched. I gave him several doses of simethicone and I rubbed his tummy. He hated both and yes, he bit me. At one point, I held him so he was looking over my shoulder and I was able to rub him tummy in a somewhat vertical position. It seemed like the gas was breaking up (tummy didn’t feel full or distended) and he left me with a stink cloud as I put him down. He gladly took some banana last night, plus some willow leaves. He seemed somewhat interested in his pellets when I put them to bed.

Well this morning there were still some pellets in the bowl (normally empty, so Wooly must of ate his fill and Leopold didn’t eat the rest). I checked the litter box, but it’s hard to tell when you have 2 buns together. There were some small poops mixed in with the normal poops. They most definitely weren’t Wooly’s.

I gave him more simethicone today and I went out to buy some fresh lettuce. I hand fed him a few leaves, but he stopped accepting them after about 4 or 5.

Other odd behavior: He’s been running around quite a bit and then suddenly stopping and grinding his teeth (just a couple of quick grinds). Plus the little weirdo has been chinning everything. I haven’t seen him chin anything for years. What the heck?

So when do I start to worry? He is still moving around. He will still accept banana treats. He will eat a little bit of nice fresh lettuce. I have to work tomorrow, but I thought about seeing if the vet would let me drop him off. But I don’t really know what she could do that is any different, unless she wanted to take an x-ray. I’m a little worried, but he will still eat some things so I’m not sure what to think.

Someone ate some more lettuce sine I originally posted this. Leopold is stretched out on his tummy right now with his eyes half closed.

If he’s stretched out in the frog leg or superman pose, I usually feel better and assume they’re relaxed. I still worry though when anything is off! I have to agree with you — if he’s eating, drinking, and pooping, and you’re giving him simethicone, my vet usually won’t intervene unless something changes. Is there any way for you or hubby to check on him once or twice during the day tomorrow?

You’re at the point where I start bouncing back and forth between “keep an eye on things” and “panic on BB”. That’s when I start freshening hay (again) and hand feeding veggies, hay, and offering oat hay tops (for some reason they seem to get my bunnies pooping).

Now the rest of the lettuce is gone and they are both sitting together in a double loaf. My guess is that it was Leopold because Wooly has been crazy picky with veggies lately.

My husband can check on him, but I don’t think he really knows what to look for.

That’s why I don’t trust my hubby…..
I tell him ‘everything’ I have read and learned about Henry, but do you think I believe he listens???

That’s why we have cameras in our phones! Take pics, text them to me, then call me! Even my hubby can follow those instructions!

I was driving once and I got lost and called him to help me – in the end I asked a stranger!

Stupid Leopold. I just went to put them to bed and I put their pellets in their food bowl. What does he do? He comes running, leaps in, and starts munching away! Wooly, on the other hand, looked at the pellets like they were poison. WTH? Did he stuff himself silly last night on a double ration (his+Leopold’s) of pellets or what? He had better get to eating some. *sigh*

Well, the thing with prolonged gas is that this could be the indication of possibly something else going on and if you aren’t seeing any results are you positive that the problem is indeed gas???

What do you mean Sarita? This episode lasted 36 hours or so. Not sure what else it could be. What are your thoughts?

They had a clean bowl this morning, so they ate all of their pellets. I just gave them some lettuce and Leopold was all over it. Wooly cautiously approached and then decided to join in. Silly rabbit.

I’m not sure my hubby would know what to look for either. No matter how much wonderful bunny knowledge I bestow on him. I hope your boys are back to normal soon LBJ!
