Gas After Neuter

Roscoe got neutered last Friday and didn’t start pooping until twelve hours post-op.  I moved him into a smaller form of his NIC enclosure on Sunday and removed any toys or things he could jump on.  Everything went well until last night, exactly a week after his operation.  I came into his room after work and noticed that he didn’t get up to greet me, as he always does.  He didn’t move around much all night, and refused to touch his hay, water, greens, and strawberries– but was okay with a Craisin or two.  

I got Simethicone (Infacol) from the drug store and gave it to him at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, and 8:00 this morning.  As I burritoed him up and grabbed my tablet to get an e-vet’s number, he jumped out of the burrito and hopped around the futon.  He eventually made his way to the floor and out of his room.  I read somewhere that exercise is good for gas, so I let him hop around the living room as much as he wanted.  He ran to Lily’s cage and made some excited tiny, wet poops and sprays.  I brought him back to his room and let him have the run of his area.  He went to his water bottle and drank a little, then took some bites of his greens.  An hour later, he’s in his litter box, nibbling at a piece of hay. 

To think, I was an instant away from calling my most trusted emergency vet who is located an hour away.  There is no proper e-vet in my area. I will continue to monitor his condition, but his activity level and interest in food and water gives me a huge sigh of relief. 

Could he have been stressed from having no extensive exercise for the week?  Or would an internal side effect from the neuter have caused him to have gas?  I have not introduced new veggies in a while.

Update: Litter box is wet and full of regular-sized (yet mildly wet) poops. I think the critical stage is over.

Yay! Yep, exercise will help break up the gas bubbles. Tummy rubs will help too.

How is your bunny doing today?

Hi!  Sorry I didn’t get back to this all week.  He seems to be back to his pre-neuter self.  Lots of energy, binkies, 500s, and affection.  The vet called on Monday to ask how he was doing, and I let them know about the gas.  They said to call them if he goes back to being unwell, I should give them a call.
