I have no green thumb but.. I just planted 2 small pots of cat grass for Miss Chacha Diva.

I had one growing in another pot, but I realized I did not put enough seeds. 2 days ago, I saw it was knocked down by someone,  even though it is on a bench. I would not doubt it was ‘she who shall not be named.’

My sunroom gets a lot of lighting so, the grass will be coming up soon

        Who is gardening?

I still have my herbs growing in the living room window. I need to get the big window box out on the back porch now that it’s warm – it seemed to do much better out there last summer. In general my herbs are so sad though 🙁 I planted quite a bit of basil, but each stalk only ends up with 3-4 leaves and they’re small. Not even enough to cook with. I generally pinch off pieces of parsley and feed to Hannah while she’s out running around 🙂 Sometimes she even jumps up on the back of the couch and grabs a little snack for herself!

I can’t wait til we get a house so we can plant a veggie garden.

The only other thing I grow is trees – we have a norfolk pine and a giant sequioa. The norfolk was a present to DH from his aunt and uncle for college graduation (not sure why they thought a tree was a good idea, but whatever). It’s gotten pretty large (a few feet tall) and I like it. Easy to care for and it actually likes being outside during the summer, no matter how hot it gets (though they’re supposed to like shade and moisture, ours is weird). We got the giant sequioa seedling during our honeymoon trip to CA. It’s about the same height (1.5 years later) but it’s filled out a lot! It’s still only about 5″ tall, so it has a long way to go before becoming giant. I love our two trees though – they’re so easy to care for and stay green year round. It’s also fun to notice their progress every year or two and remember how tiny they used to be.

Elrohwen, I know I moved from a house to an apartment. The house was too big for my dad and I. I want to get some long pots to plant some cilantro, but I’m wondering if somebunny will be a repeat offender and try to eat the cilantro while it is growing

I really like trees So pretty!!! when I was growing up in my childhood home, my grandpa planted 2 trees in the yard and it grew very nice and tall

            Otto and hannah like basil?

I haven’t started yet but around the middle of May, we plant a pretty big garden with stuff for the buns (and for humans, but mostly them ) We can’t plant it to early though other wise it freezes :-\ My dad does most of the work, I don’t really know how to garden that well. I tried to plant some parsley in the house about a week ago, but all that came up was grass and some clover

I have an indoor garden that I use for the animals only it is mostly tomatoes, herbs, mustard green, collard greens, etc. It’s hard to grow things indoors but it works for me especially the reptiles since I can grow most of their stuff in their tanks. I have window boxes for the herbs.

Then I have a small outdoor garden for me and some of the pets other stuff I can’t grow indoors.

I learned to garden from my grandma and my mom when my mom grew up either you had a garden or you starved lol.

Brit, Hannah likes everything, Otto likes nothing! Haha. He loves parsley with meals, but when I try to offer him some from the window box he looks suspicious and runs away. Hannah will eat anything though and chewed a couple basil stalks down to nubs when she got out of the cage one night. lol She also likes the parsley and marjoram I grow. At least she’s never gone for the sequoia, which sits next to the herbs.

I live in an apartment so gardening is a bit hard. I have some basil growing by the window but it’s soo sooo small. Lago knocked down the parsley one while she was exploring on my desk and broke the pot and killed the poor parsley.

                      {edited to add: I finally have people I can show this photo to who might realize why it makes me so happy to not have flowers!}

Yay for this thread! I just took a photo of the garden this morning before I came to work. It supposed to be a flower bed, but I planted my veggies instead and they have gone crazy with the bunny hay for mulch and the poo for fertilizer.

Up and down this 18 foot long and 2 foot wide stretch I have:

romain lettuce plants, peppermint, spearmint, dill, catnip, brussel sprouts, leaf lettuce (all that bright green stuff), 4 types of tomatoes for the guinea pigs, swiss chard, boston lettuce, rosemary, a few onions and kolarabi (got that by mistake, it was labeled lettuce)

In the pots on the porce I have several kinds of oregano, basil, sage, thyme and a couple of sad little bok choy.

Just out of sight are two grapevines and a mulberry tree. I’ve been nursing a small weeping willow in the back yard and have another 2×2 ft square of leaf lettuce coming along. My dad taught me to garden, but I’ve never had such a lush crop as this year. I want to put a sign in front of it that says POWERED BY POO   😉

Now if I could just get parsely and cilantro to grow  ;-(  They even like the roses since I don’t use chemicals on them.

I’m attempting to grow cilantro and mint for Oreo but it’s not going so well. I tend to forget to water them I think I have to just stick to buying her veggies

At my apartment, I had a balcony and I attempted to grow parsley and cilantro. But neither one grew very well despite being in sun and outside. I asked my dad if I could plant a garden at his place and he said no. Boo! lol

But I have 3 house plants that are still alive. Which is amazing cause I don’t have a green thumb either. (And I just originally typed green thump. LOL)

We do a small veggie garden each year, and now that I have my bun I am thinking of planting some things for her. We also put our aerogarden to use growing fresh lettuce for her, which she absolutely loves!

We did cilantro last year, which she and my husband both love. However, I found out that my dog had taken up the liberty of watering it for me. Such a little helper

                              Kralspace- Wow that’s some garden!!!!

I love to grow my own veggies but don’t have much of a green thumb. Most years our garden turned out beautiful with very little effort but the last 2 years it’s being stubborn. Last year hardly anything grew. I usually do my planting in early June but I’m going to start some herbs indoors within a week or so.

The bunnies have a cactus in their bunny room that is surprisingly still alive.

I just bought a book on container gardening and will be giving it a shot this summer. I live in an apartment, but I have a balcony. I’ll be growing tomatoes for myself (and to make salsa with!), and lots of lettuce/greens/herbs for Riley.

Supposedly lettuce is one of the easiest to grow in pots.

Kralspace! That is an AMAZING garden!!!!!!! I mean breathtaking! WOW!

I live in an apartment with some crazy kids at the end that knock my pots over so I think I will be forced to do an indoor garden. I plan to start it as soon finals are done next week.
I want to plant some wheat grass, cilantro, hanging tomatoes, and maybe some other herbs. I want to plant flowers so I can feed her flower petals but I will have to do some research, I dont want to make her sick. I might plant a hibiscus because they are my favorite flowers!!!!!
My apartment needs some life in it, alll 3 of us are kind of lazy zombies lol

thanks, I wish I had the same luck with flowers, but I kill every pretty thing I’ve ever tried except for these climbing roses. I have nothing in the house because of the cats.

It helps when one of my good friends is a Master Composter and helps me keep my compost pile going.

Lettuce does great in containers. I’ve been surprised the most by the romaine lettuce. I harvest the outside leaves everyday and it just keeps on shooting up more. I enjoy cooking with the fresh herbs and I go around and snip off pieces of all the herbs, catnip, etc and scatter them around the bunny room for them to investigate during the day.

Do you know what would make a nifty vertical herb garden?

                                            ta da!

I think it could work!  Just line with a plastic bag, fill with potting mix, poke holes in bag where you want to plant the seedling.

@Kralspace, I’m impressed you’re keeping the weeping willow going. You’ve had it a while now haven’t you.  I thought they were supposed to be dead easy to grow from a cutting but I’m not having luck. I got a branch from a local tree and got roots going when in was in a bucket of water, but when I planted it, it deteriorated.

that’s a good idea jg, I have one of those from Ikea. The buns were not too thrilled about having their hay stuffed into it.

I’ll take a photo of the poor little willow tonight. It’s actually Willow II. Willow I lasted til mid summer 2 years ago and I forgot to water it just ONE day, but I guess in the Texas heat that was too much. No matter how I tried to make it up to it, it dropped all leaves and was gone within the week. ;-(

I planted Willow II fall before last and it did great until we had that unusually cold winter in Feb. I tried wrapping to protect it, but come spring, nuttin. I kept on fertilizing and watering and a couple of weeks ago it sprouted from the base and lower foot of trunk so the root did survive and is trying.

This year I’m going to hook a piece of old hose to the water storage cube and let it run just a little bit 24/7 and see if it wont’ make it.
