Gabby came to me in a small pet store “rabbit cage” and had lived in it all winter in the people’s garage. They were getting rid of her due to it too hot in the summer for her to stay in the garage. Once I picked her up and saw how precious she was I decided right then if possible she would no longer have a cage.

I started out with having her in the laundry room and it worked really well for a couple of weeks. Until she learned she could jump the gate. Then my mom gave me a taller gate and we tried letting her have the laundry room as well as the kitchen and dining room area. She continued to do reallly good so we let her come out into the living room when we were home to spend time with us in here.

She loved the living room and would binky around crazily in happiness. She chewed a couple of cords and my husband bunny proofed them so we decided maybe she could have the living room to be in too. We moved the gate to the hallway so she can’t get in our non bunny proofed rooms that are also carpeted and she seems very happy with this arrangement.

She has a certain spot under the guinea pig cages that she lounges about and when I first get up in the morning she runs to see what special treat mama will give her. She’ll let us pet her most times if we stop by her when walking through but most of the time she occupies herself with toys or just exploring around the rooms.

So far I think it’s going really well and we’ll be able to keep her free range in half the house from now on. She’s such a good bun and the things she’s chewing on or messing with I can block to keep her from getting to them. Just thought I’d share that Gabby is a big girl now and the keeper of my heart.

Awe! It’s great when you can finally start letting them explore more.

I’m excited she is doing so well. That was my long term goal to have her be able to stay in at least half the house free range and to find her a mate to spend her time with. I contacted a rabbit rescue that’s about an hour away from us and they said it could be worked out for me to bring Gabby and have her meet some of the male buns and see if a mate could be found for her. I don’t know when I’ll do it for sure but I’m hoping it will be pretty soon. *fingers crossed* Just have to ask hubby if it’s okay.

Good luck. I hope Gabby finds the perfect match. And that’s wonderful that she’s doing so well with all that freedom. She must be so happy now, having you in her life! I hate to imagine how depressing and miserable it was to live in a little cage in someone’s garage.
