Anyone have issues with fruit flies from either hay or literbox? We changed the liter box once a day and replenish hay 2x a day… recently i’ve noticed an increase in fruit flies… i’m wondering if it has anything to do with these two things.. anyone have these issues and what did you do?

are you certain they are fruit flies? If so they are likely coming from somewhere else in your home, they wouldn’t be attracted to hay or the bunny boxes. There are also these little gnats that can breed in sink drains etc. There are other types of small flies that can be a risk for buns (flystrike), but really only if the buns have feces stuck to them or are in unsanitary conditions.

If they ARE fruit flies, then they are harmless. They will lay eggs on certain types of litter, but the litter would need to be moist to attract them. Cleaning the litter box more often would solve the problem. Thinking back to genetics class… fruit flies turn into adults about 8-10 days after hatching.

And yes, there are other possibilities. There are drain flies, fungus gnats, etc.

Cleaning the litterbox frequently is important, and also ensuring you have an appropriately sized litterbox is important too! Rabbits can poop 100+ times a day, so if a litterbox is too small, shallow, etc., one day of build up can be “not clean” for a while. Air circulation/ventilation is also really important so it’s not getting too humid (which not only attracts bugs, but also is a risk for ammonia build up for the rabbit’s respiratory health).

A picture of your set-up would be helpful! We are having difficulty with photo uploads right now, but you can upload the photo to a website and then link it here.
