Heres a story with a happy ending.
I moved my horse to a new barn on May 1st. The barn where I was keeping her before, I had been there for almost a year and a half. They had a hutch bunny, which I was dismayed to see when I first brought my horse there. Ive had bad experiences falling in love with barn bunnies in the past.
The story is that the riding instructor had bought this bunny and his brother. They had them for 2 years, and then moved to an apartment. One of them died and they decided they didnt want a bunny in their apartment anymore
so they gave the bunny to the stable owner for her children (double
). Of course, the spoiled rotten kids soon tired of the bunny and it was stuck in a hutch, behind the barn, far away from the house. What ticked me off further is that they bought the kids a hamster after they tired of the bunny.
I felt so bad for this little bun and spent many a hot day, cold winter night worrying about his health and safety. Hes 7 years old now and spent over 5 years in that hutch. Im extremely surprised that little bunny has survived our extreme Atlantic winters and hot, muggy summers. Especially, since he is a tiny Nethie.
I did the best I could for this little bunny. I went to see my horse almost every day and always brought a bag of veggies for him. They just fed him whatever junk they had left over in the house. Often I would find a whole banana or turnip in his cage. That little bunny has a stomach of steel! He had a bout of gas once that I nursed him through. The owner was always telling me to take him home and that she was waiting for him to die. It broke my heart, but I couldnt take in another rabbit, financially or space wise. I asked everyone I could think of if they could take him. He is the sweetest little bunny, and for a bunny that was rarely handled, very cuddly and calm. He was well-named: Cuddles.
I had to leave the stable because they were unable to keep boarders anymore and I felt so awful about abandoning Cuddles. The owner told me she wanted the bunny gone. I feared for his safety. This is the kind of person that would think nothing of putting a domestic bunny out in the woods.
A few months ago, my husbands best friend, who always enjoyed my rabbits, mentioned that he was thinking about getting one. So I explained to him about Cuddles and he said he would think about it and wanted to come meet him. Well, as soon as he picked up Cuddles, he couldnt say no. So a few days later, we went shopping at the pet store and he bought Cuddles all kinds of healthy hay, food and toys. I gave him Bindis old cage.
Cuddles has now been a happy house bunny for several weeks. I go see him once a week.
Not the greatest pic but here is Cuddles out exploring in his new home.
